I choose SMF because it is powerful, easy to manage, simple to use user interface, elegant and comes with lots of free modifications and themes. Just because I've read a few people who think it's the best free platform out there.

To be honest I can see why they say that, from a first users point of view it's as easy as any other to set up, but once you have done that, it can be a bit confusing, the ACP is totally different from any other I've seen, and takes a bit of getting used to, it's actually a bit of mess compared to the layout and tab structure like there is phpBB3 or MyBB, and it lacks the organisation of VB.

If you are running SMF 2.0.6 or any version of SMF you may want to keep an eye on your system. SMF has not had a very good track record over the past few years regarding critical security issues.

Look at XenForo, it took them only a year to get out of beta, and have a stable release... and its only a team of 2 people.

I am currently undecided on SMF. I run and SMF websites before and have changed hosting because I felt that it wasnt fast enough. I am now on my third host and am now on cloud hosting and my website is still pretty slow, I think this is because of SMF now and not because of the host.

I have set up my benchtech(dot)(co)(.uk) technology community and am starting to get some members however my site is going slow. Reading around alot of people dislike SMF and I am starting to join...
