Yes it is very complicated to install mods on phpbb, and on mybb is really easy. Agreed.

What more or less turns me off is not necessarily that I feel it's behind, but more that they refuse (or are slow) to recognize their flaws and improve them. If the lack of quick reply wasn't a good enough example, then when they add these features, then how will 3.1's plugin system be compared to some of its competitors? Don't get me wrong, that doesn't mean that phpBB is a bad piece of software. If it was, they would have done something to mass-anger a major component of their community, who would then convert elsewhere.

I'll at least give them credit here. phpBB 3's Admin CP is at the very least an improvement over phpBB 2. Likewise, IPB improved their ACP when version 3 came around and MyBB did as well from 1.2 to 1.4. Then, there's vBulletin...

phpBB is a good software, but their permissions are making me tired. But as Kaiser said, there are some nice themes there. It's a shame they dropped phpBB2 support. They can say phpBB3 is more secure, but I prefer recoding 10.000 lines rather than using phpBB3. :P Just my two cents :)

Well, they actually had a security audit done before phpBB 3 went gold, whereas phpBB 2 could easily just get hit several times per day by a worm or a bot, attacking any flaws in the software.

I'm sure they've learned their lesson by now.

That shouldn't be a problem, no matter how much we know we always learn new things everyday and improve.

Well, phpBB2 is more user friendly than phpBB3. The permissions are way too hard to understand.
Yeah, that's true, but I prefer spending a few days recoding rather than using the phpBB3 permission system. =P
