... of managing forums: what is it?

My least favorite part is probably the beginning: promoting and just having to deal with a tiny community.

Exactly the same part I would say Nick. Other than that it would be the drama aspect of it and those who repetitively sign up when they have been trolling etc.

    For me it depends...

If its within my usual niche, I can get advertising/affiliates easy enough, so promotions aren't that hard.

If its a new niche, its a bit harder, but I experience an overlap with many tech areas, so I can grab members from there.

What I really hate, is continually maintaining forums (I do weekly-monthly updates), and dealing certain members.

The vast majority of my forums is made up of teenagers, and script kiddies, and we often get random DDOS/HTTP flood attacks, and have had personal attacks against staff.

I used to think that, too, but I've realized that it's not a bad thing being the top poster on your forums. It actually shows that you care about your forums. :)

Right now my least favorite thing is DNS issues. :(
