What's the best portal for SMF?

Has anyone used SMF around here? (simplemachines.org)\\

I have a friend that I helped setup a site for a few years ago, they have a band and play music at bars on the weekends and through the night.
I need a nice easy portal that will display a big calendar of their events, and maybe a few images, like an HTML box that I can setup a picture of the band.

I'm going to try out SimplePortal and see how it works.

For a portal I thought vB used to have one somewhere that was free. It looked pretty cool.

But if you were looking at a different one then yeah go for it.
