I've been using vBulletin 4 for about two years now, well since, 2011 and I really like it, but I don't see myself upgrading to vBulletin 5 anytime soon.

So, which software do you prefer, vB 4 or vB5?

vBulletin 4... but that isn't a resounding endorsement.

I don't have no need to troll. You're currently trolling by not answering the question. Obviously, vBulletin 5 is hated by some people, but there still could be some users that actually use the software. It's always a good idea to compare the two products.

See Linus Tech, they had a huge community and not even into a month they jumped ships to IPB.
If someone is currently running vBulletin 5 other than IB, you should get your head checked asap!

That is about as good example as you can give to the state of vBulletin right now.

It's easy to tell by the responses who owns which products and who doesn't. I own licenses for both vB4 and vB5. Each has issues. vB4 is dangerously behind the curve. vB5 is dangerously behind the curve. They are two separate and inherently unequal curves. If all a site owner desires is a forum then vB4 is the answer. It will be brought up to PHP specs and IE compatibility specs in the near future. If a site owner desires true social media connection then the answer is vB5, which will eventually have those elements in addition to all of the functions of vB4. This isn't an aplles to apples comparison and it isn't as black and white as "vB5 didn't work for one very large site in a specific niche with specific needs therefore it doesn't work or won't work for anyone in any niche." That's an entirely fallacious argument.

I really, really doubt anyone's going to say vBulletin 5 is the better script, because it objectively isn't. It lacks important features, it's got a pretty poor design that doesn't work properly and a whole host of bugs. vBulletin 4 is at least... sort of usable.

Neither is exactly brilliant mind, but vB 4 is the best of a mediocre bunch.

I have a vB5 license and did few test conversions and they all failed miserably.
Obviously you don't see it that way.

You honestly think vB5 is a true social media website? You lost your credibility there.
Eventually get there? Do you know it's been almost a year since vB5 was released and it's still junk?

    vB5 is slow
    vB5 is not a complete re-write
vB5 amount of bugs is out of control and will probably remain that way for the life of the product.
vB5 lacks several features, where is the 150 new features that were promised?

I am a member of LinusTech Lips community and I saw it how terrible it was when they were using vB5.

Are people going to wait on vBulletin for another 2-3 years for the product to become stable? Hell no.
IPB 4 will most likely be released before vBulletin 5 becomes truly a gold level product, XenForo 1.2 gold release is going to be released soon, both of these products are going to be leaving vB in the dust.

VB3 > VB4 > VB5 That is how it goes. I no longer own any VB licenses, but there was a time I owned every version including the newest one. And I had 15 total about 8 months ago. All sold, because vBulletin is no longer any good. And I am as about the biggest vBulletin fanboys alive. Sadly it is going down the crapper

That's a different discussion from "vBulletin 4 or vBulletin 5?"

I am still with vb3. When upgrading to a new server I will switch to Xenforo. vB is dead imho.

But I will need time to test and to switch :(

vB4 is still the only viable one now.

5 is full of bugs, and very few mods work on it.

vBulletin 4 is the most popular major version of vBulletin (52.4% of vBulletin sites are using 4.x).

vBulletin 3.8 is the most popular minor version of vBulletin (40.7% using 3.8.x).

vBulletin 5? Lol... yeah... 0.5% using that. Those numbers correlate pretty well with the viability of using vB5 vs. vB4 for a site.
