There was a thread on vb.com started in 2002 with sites having over 1million posts
The first post, listing the sites was last updated in 2009
    http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/foru...4-huge-vbulletins-1-million-posts-and-greater

Its surprising just how many of the sites listed are still running vb and how many have not been on the latest upgrade train. Either running the latest 3.7, 3.8, 4 series etc
They find a version that works, does what they need and stick to it

Something I also noticed was a lot are on the standard, out the box look

I think it goes back to what a few of us have been saying all along, the mass migration of big boards to Xenforo is a load of Spherical Objects, there are far more sticking with the "it's not broke so why fix it mentality" than there are with the jump on the bandwagon mentality, and I still say that time will be the true test.

You will find that the majority of big boards jumped from vb4, some day soon those on vb3 will have to jump ...Honest Sir!!

Something else you notice with some of the sites, they reached over 1 million posts and look dead.
So they could well have been hit by google penalties over the years
Methods of ranking that used to work, got them a decent amount of traffic, then got them slapped further along

I haven't looked at that list in a while. I had 3 sites on the list. 1 is still on vbulletin 3.8 because the new owner has abandoned it and the loyal users that still post there, 1 was shut down shortly after I sold it by the new owner and 1 is now being revived back to health by the third new owner and still runs vbulletin 3.7.

In some ways the "it's not broke, so why fix it" mentality may hurt them in the long run.

I guess (as stated) only time will tell.

When I think of a forum I immediately think of vB 3.

I don't know how many other people are like this but when I do a Google search for forums I generally:

    -Never see xenForo
    -Hardly ever see IPB
-When I see phpBB or something custom I keep looking
-vB 3 means it's good to go
-When I see vB 4+ I throw up first and then usually still use the forum because sometimes it's inevitable (forums.mtbr.com is my main vB 4 forum)

What's crazy are there are some on the list that are now just parking pages. Crazy how a 1 million plus from can turn into a parking page.
