DAMN Shawn!! That's a hell of a list.

I'm curious what you found with the memcache datastore system? Is that going back to this? http://tracker.vbulletin.com/browse/VBIV-5786

A lot of us would be very interested in how you are going to do image sprites.

Do you have an example of one that you reported that was not addressed (I'll gladly look into it)? We are actually quite fast at dealing with reported posts. In fact, I just checked, and in the last 100 days, I show 7 reported posts, and 1 reported PM (most recently from 2 days ago), every single one was dealt with accordingly.

It really strikes me as odd when I hear people claim we don't process reported posts, because it's absolutely false.

oooh okay, well that makes sense

Just out of interest, about how many reported post do your staff deal with a month?
Are certain months worse then others?

I just looked and there were 1,463 reports in the last 30 days (every single one has been dealt with already). I doubt some months are more than others. Also, often a single report covers multiple threads/posts (like if a spammer is spamming a bunch of threads we might only get one report before we have dealt with it all). This also doesn't count stuff we deal with proactively as we see it (which is much more than the reported ones).

To be honest, I don't even remember what the issue was with memcache for certain, but yeah... I think it might have been that.

Historically, we've had 217,706 reported posts... but we've also deleted about 1.3M posts, given 396,587 infractions, and banned over 100,000 users... so you can see we act on a *lot* more than just stuff that's reported by users.

Freaking heck, you get a lot of rule breaking on DigitalPoint, don't you? I assume it comes with the territory and the forum topic, webmaster forums are always notorious for spammers and black hat 'seo' specialists trying to use them for cheap backlinks.

Yep... this is on top of a TON of custom code that flat out prevents ~75 users from being able to register for a new account every day (if we think there might even be a remote *chance* the user WILL be a spammer, we don't let them register). And also doesn't include the 500 or so posts made every day that Akismet/StopForumSpam block for us.

It's a constant job dealing with it, and we are constantly tweaking things to adapt to new "issues". For example I had to write some code this morning to make it easy to delete 750 user accounts that I found someone had created (all different IPs and such) without needing to do them one by one.

One person created 750 users just today?
Do you think they were going to spam the site, or do people sell accounts?

I know this is sort of going off topic, I may move some of our post to your interview thread if that's fine with you?

I think if you ask the same question in 20 years, the answer will be the same. As long as I know him on vbulletin.com he's rewriting code.

Doesn't matter to me if you move posts. :)

750 accounts over 5 days from different IPs. Fairly common thing we have to deal with. People use the accounts to spam and/or sell the accounts. It's somehow become a whole mini-industry (probably because we actually ARE fairly good at stopping people from creating duplicate accounts, that they are willing to pay a decent amount to get one)... https://encrypted.google.com/search?q=buy+digital+point+account

Of course we also have systems in place that are pretty good at detecting with an account changes hands. Quite silly when someone pays hundreds of dollars for an account, only to have it automatically banned the instant they use it.

Well, we know Shawn didn't go to prison, but what did result from the lawsuit with eBay?

Reading all that makes me not want to deal with eBay at all either. Sick corporations and the people who lead them will be, if anything, the downfall to capitalism.

I just have one comment too. Guilt is a lousy excuse to do something you simply don't want to do.
