It seems like the official site can't be reached at this point in time, and has been like that for a few hours... did something go wrong with their server/hosting?

I can access both, but they're quite slow (loading-wise).

Both of them were down for quite a while (I mean completely down), but I can access them now.

Yeah, it's fine now, goodness knows why it was unavailable earlier.

There were quite a few data centers and networks that were having issues since yesterday afternoon, possibly due to the recent storms that ripped through the East Coast.

    That's only my guess, though.

lol, don't count on that to much. Expect it to be atleast another 2-4 weeks before beta is being talked about being released

Beta will also be private, but it will be tested by a much larger group compared to Alpha testing.

Nope you won't be able to download it at all until its final from my understanding.

There won't be any "release canidates" as they've done in the past. Why they've taken this route I'm unsure of, I just hope they got the majority of server configs and setups in either alpha or beta testing, if not watch out for the SS Failboats maiden voyage as this will be the first major release for internet brands, and unless they want it to be the last, they'll need to get everything right the first time around with the way that community has been lately.

Quite right. If, after the number of warnings from the community, this release fails on untested configurations etc, then Internet Brands have a huge problem on their hands.

When they do release it, it might be prudent to wait a few days before upgrading in case any huge problems are found.

That should generally be the case for any product or service, unless it's been through some major testing and there aren't any huge changes since the final RC.

For those of you here who own a Steam gameserver, you would know how much Valve loves to screw up their updates, leaving server owners (usually Windows) with a broken server.

This is a bit frustrating. I'm hoping that there's a reasonable explanation behind the downtime - I'm assuming it's server or network related.
