If we ever get some regular members then I'll get some help, no real need at the moment as not much happening.

There is only three staff members at the moment on my community. There isn't any need for more staff at the moment. When we grow to a greater volume then we will bring up some moderators.

We have 8 Administrators and 6 Mods, which I know is not normal.

Yes. And you will fall into trouble with that soon. Keep your mod-team small and trusted, also the number of admins seems to be way too high.

Unfortunately, given our site's content nature, we need to be adding more staff on a regular basis. We do a lot of proactive moderating, because reactive moderating (waiting for post reports) could result in really bad situations. The admins all get along really well, but we have agreed we shouldn't be adding any others for a while :)

I'd venture to say, the number of admins and mods depends on the activity and content of the online community. There are no rules for what is right or wrong in this respect. There is however, certain issues to be concerned about, like the software you are using allowing unfiltered and even harmful HTML in text fields in the admin area. I'd be wary of letting only very, very trusted people use these text fields.

I just hired a new moderator the other day. We now have 4 administrators and 8 moderators. We currently have a good staff team, my team works pretty hard on a daily basis.

I am the sole admin and mod on both my sites, but I really need to get at least one more moderator on board.

What type of compensation to you offer your moderators?

I don't offer anything to our staff members, but I do chat with them on a daily basis. They're all volunteers.
