Clearly, as Google is the most popular and most used search engine, many would look towards Adword's familiar interface and easy-to-use ad setups. Finding the keywords is the hardest part, but once that is done you are charged per click on the ad that will show up on Google's search results, depending on how concentrated the keyword is.

Is buying AdWords that cost-effective? I would rather choose to use my money to buy links, or set up new blogs rather than placing ads on search results and other sites.

Methew is right but methew advertising is also a important part. May be you buy links or create blogs. If you use 3usd your ads are shown over 3000+ sites may be for little time but it drive traffic globaly.
