Not every decision KAM makes is ultimately involved with making profit. Like the extension they gave to customers, for having the blackout during the lawsuit. That was definitely not with profits in mind. It was to make amends. And it was a very good business decision.

I'd also venture to say, they have higher goals than "just" making money. It is called........

    ............satisfying customers!

    Why?

Because they know ONLY WITH SATISFIED CUSTOMERS can they ever expect to make money.

It is funny you think you can speak for Kier and Mike, but yet you can't even come up with the policy for what customers should expect from the "official" forum support for the company you work for. Unbelievable.

That's still profits- it was for long term profits rather than short term profits though.

So then, what is VB's strategy? Because on a corporate level, it doesn't look like they think or care in the least about customers service or retention...

Joe and Mark, not everything in business boils down to steering for profits (has IB brainwashed you two?).

You don't make amends for failure by saying, "Hey, if we give our customers something back for our failings, we can stroke them later for more profit. Hahaha!" You say something more like, "We need to make sure we can make amends for our failure and hope most customers will be grateful and stick with us." And then, do it. No profit in mind. Keeping customers loyal, that is what they were looking for.

Profits, revenues and losses are all results. They aren't goals. Companies who set profits, margins and revenue as goals are basically lost. They don't understand those are all results of the goals they should be setting. Good product quality. Good service. Effective marketing and sales. Smart management of resources. When all that is done right, then the results are automatically good revenue and profits. Results guys. They are only results. NOT GOALS!

Aren't we being a bit too sensitive here? As long as they keep putting out a quality product I don't think 95% of people will care if they mingle with members in the chit-chat forums or not. I'd be more than happy knowing they are 100% focused on developing xenForo and not wasting time making useless posts in the chat forums.

A lot of opinion there Scott but I feel you are wrong about just about all of it. Yes loyalty from customers is good- it's good for future profits and that is a company's motivation for trying to foster loyalty. There is no way we'll ever know for sure whether the motive behind something was for profit for for moral reasons- and the fact is- the intent really doesn't matter to the end customer. What is best for everyone is when both result in the same outcome.

While profit is important for a company (not all companies) if they are to fixated on it they can lose more then they will gain if they play it differently. Why is customer happiness important to make profit the answer to that is when a customer feels they are cared for and a company makes them feel special and important that customer will spend more of his cash at that company. There is another aspect in this what does a company do with charity or other donations while the customer looks to there selfs they also look what a company does. This is one of the reasons many companies donate money or other stuff to charity, for a local supermarket it can be that stuff that does not sell goes to charity or what is close to go over date. Companies that are to fixated on profit and not on the product they make, is or will be a disaster to happen people will complain and move to another product.

    Joe, you said....

    That is almost like saying.....

....do things to gain loyalty and the RESULT is more than likely more sales (i.e. more revenues). And if the company is managed properly and is efficient, the RESULT from those sales is a decent profit.

What is so wrong with what I am saying then?

Edit: we_are_borg also understands what I am talking about.;)

The problem is that most companies communicate when there doing well, if it goes wrong they dont communicate, we have seen this at vBulletin and when the lawsuite was going on with Xenforo. That is why big companies have PR in house that can set the message of the company. The moment communication breaks down the company loses toutch with the customer the company at that point does not know what the customer wants and the product will suffer. Xenforo reeastablished communication and gave an extension on the renewal date there only mistake in this was limiting it to people that had an active license at a point in time, the problem is that they put others in front of the once that could not take the risk to renew. Xenforo got over it by developing and letting people see that they continue to give good qaulity software. vBulletin stopped communicating trashed the software to absolute minimum lots of features missing and thought people would be happy. In the end vBulletin profit will be lower because they forgot who paid the bills in the end the customer. By giving customers what they want like Xenforo is doing the customers website is growing in the end they need add-ons like a special search or a resource tracker, so you help the customer grow but in the end you'll make a profit. The company needs happy customers that feel at home and the customer needs a company that is more than a bussiness.
