I'm sure you can already predict the situation based on the title: A member breaks a rule, so you send them a nice fair warning and hint as to what the next steps could be should they continue to break the rule. So they take the dramatic route and act like they won't care if you ban them.

How do you handle this? Do you just ignore it, and put it aside until/unless they act up again? Or do you give them what they want?

Personally, I'd just ignore it until they continued to break the rule or disobey my warning.

Ignore the PM and don't change what I would otherwise do.

Or possibly have some fun with it :D

Make them change their password every 2 days, put up a notice customized with their name that only they can see. Possibly a custom title : )

Or maybe ignore whatever negativity there was in the PM and simply appeal to their warmer side. "I know what it must be under terrible pressure because you are a fantastic member, and I really appreciate the time you spend on the forum".

I usually ignore it. However, if it's notorious trouble maker that I really do want off my forum: I take them at their word.

I would ignore then continue with my commitment to follow through on the banning process when the rules have been broken again.

For those that want to 'have fun' with those folks, isn't there a mod to annoy certain users? If so, then you can move those particular users to that usergroup and....set it and forget it! :)

I don't ban unless it's necessary. Everybody has the power to simply not login to their account.

"Miserable Users" might be what you are referring to. Definitely works, but there are other possibilities as mentioned in my previous post only using the stock vb code. Other software may have other ways too.

To annoy, you can put all kinds of goodies in the notice field. Like barfing soundbites, annoying music, nails over boards, screams, etc.

Mostly I tell them to suck it up and then i further ignore it, unless they are trouble makers that where on their way out anyway.

I haven't ran across this situation yet but I would probably ignore the person....that and maybe add them to my miserable user list ;)

If a member gives an answer like that, I am happy to do it. Waste of my time to wait till he/she brakes the rules anyway.

    I will ban them.

If they sign back up with a new account name, I will ban them as a spammer and ban their ip address..

I have banned members for posting that they do not like the forum. So I'll ban their account - and the reason why they were banned "If you dont like it here, I'll help you leave."

Ignore them until they break another rule.

..... unless they come back with "ban me if you dare" - in which case I simply do as they ask.

I put them into a usergroup we have where all their posts go into moderation and they have to suffer knowing that no one can see their posts until an admin approves it.

I never give them the satisfaction of banning them.

I ban spammers and trolls without a second thought, but when it comes to genuine members I would rather stick them into the moderated usergroup for a while. I've only banned one genuine member, completely and irrevocably, and that was because he did a bad bad thing and was a danger to others.
