I really can't belief after Forumasion it would happen again but then to advertise hotspot by the same people! Tanya and Olivier, I find this very sad, advertise hotspot was one of the best forums I know of its kind. I think it all happened yesterday, I got on and was quite shocked

Backups are invaluable. My sites are backed up off site on an hourly basis. Cheap hosting that doesn't offer this type of capability will bite you in the long run.

what's the story with "forumasion" ?

so the forum owners had this happen before, and STILL didn't have a backup system in place?

I'd be looking at what the two incidents had in common. common webhost? common moderators or admins?

    Exactly..

Anyone running a site for profit should have a function such as this. my :2cents: anyway.

I backup mine automatically as well, using multiple backup methods.

If someone hard deleted much of your forum, that would show up in your backups quite quickly. Could you recover from that using your current backup techniques?

    (just curious)

Just looked at how far back I have them.

The past 2 days have 1 every hour that I can chose from. Beyond that there is one from midnight every day for the past month.

So if I had to back more than two days I could still get one for each day of the previous month. With a massive deletion like the OP had even the ability the reach back a week if the OP had been away and not seen it for a some time is a lot better than loosing all that info.

It sounds like a great 2 layer system. : )

I don't quite understand how you can go back in time with 1 rsync backup, but that is besides the point.

We also have a 2 layer system, and like an idiot I accidentally deleted every attachment we had (file system based). That was quickly reflected in the rsync'd backup. But we also make full backups a few times a year and could recover the attachments from those.

My host uses R1Soft products for backups.

Nothing is every 100% safe. Sure is a bad situation that host found itself in. It's a good thing I guess that the 1st of the month I also do a backup of the entire site and store it in my PC, in my local and online backup.

Been burned before, I am super anal with backups.

I have contingency plans for contingency plans that go awry.

Indeed its better to use never a free host especially if you are very serious and got plans going long ahead in the future with your project.

Forumasion got hacked by the same people. I am not the forum owner of advertise hotspot btw, just a long time member, who has seen the site grow into something great until now.

the site we are talking about: Advertise Hotspot - Advertisement In Your Hands

to read the story about forumasion see this: Rok says good bye to Forumansion, very sad news - Webmaster Forum

They didn't hack an account but instead spammed the place none stop.
