Nah, the help section is appropriate.

    Why?

This boy needs some serious HELP! .

Masterchief: Sure does look like a funky crop circle design, doesn't it? It was done for us by someone. I'm sure he'll be happy to see you liked it.

Now, what were you trying to do with those \ marks?

Hope you don't mind me just popping a question or two into this topic - didn't think I should start a whole new topic for just a couple of questions.

The old topics that have been archived/closed - does that mean these same subjects can't be brought up again? I'm not sure, since I haven't done a search way back, but say if there was a topic started on "who's you favorite actor" or something, could it not be started again? Why are topics closed would be another question? Do you get "demoted" for posting a duplicate topic? (One that was started by someone else). I guess what I'm worried about is if I started a topic that I didn't see as active - but it had already been started and then closed, if it would be a no-no around here?

A little glitch I have is that I went in and changed my password, now I see that there are two of me on the Member's Lists. I know I'm a little psychotic, but "two of me"... uh, wait... does anyone else see two Banshee Laughters? If not, jussstt never mind. .

One more thing??? Could someone point me in the direction of the evolution explanation around here? Are there rules, like no personal attacks, etc? What does one do to get demoted? I'm sorry if I'm bugging ya, just want to get things straight and not step on toes right off the bat.

    Ok, I'll quit now...

    Ummm, let's see...

Old topics...if they're old, you can still bring them up - just post in them again. A closed thread is indicated by a little gold lock off to the side - even if you wanted to post in that thread, you couldn't. An archived topic, according to the FAQ, is...

Topics are usually closed because 1) there wasn't enough interest and it died off, or 2) it was an off-topic post (for example, a post about the movie The Sixth Sense in th ePets forum) and a Moderator locked the thread. Although, in those cases, we'll usually move the thread to the appropriate forum. I've locked one thread because it was just so out of place, that is just didn't belong anywhere.

You don't get "demoted" for posting a duplicate topic - you're just pointed to the original topic in a kind & friendly fashion. And as for demotion, there's really only 2 ways to be "demoted" - to lose karma (which really isn't a bad thing) or to have Alien boot you.

If you're not sure if you're starting a duplicate topic, do a search first. If you find a topic you wanted to bring up, post to it - if not, start a new one. .

And the evolution explanation - you mean to go from peon to drone to prober and all that? Basically all it does is show how many posts you have. For an listing of the ranks and their post totals, scope out Alien's explanation at http://www.aliensoup.com/ubb/Forum6/HTML/000031.html

And you don't get demoted...there are such rules as "no personal attacks" - http://www.aliensoup.com/cgi-bin/forums/ubbmisc.cgi?action=getannounce&ForumNumber=6&Start=2451773.99&End=2452138&Session=2451789.1423 - and you're not bugging us. We're glad you're asking. .

Just to make sure I have it right... an archived topic is a "closed" topic. Not closed necessarily because it was bad but it just ran out of gas?? There wouldn't be an old, but still open thread in the archives then? (Believe it or not, I did read the FAQ's) I'm just an easily confused type of person! .

Aaahhh... there are rules about playing nice, good, I'm glad to know that. I just couldn't find 'em.

The rest of the questions you answered, thank you! I have a better understanding now.

There is one thing that is niggling at me - the mention of someone having a double registration being a big no-no... no joke, my name is listed twice in the members list. I'm not exactly sure how that happend, but could someone delete one of them before I get that big alien boot? .

No, I don't think so. I think, by definition, archives are closed. Mind you, I'm not sure the site has been up & running long enough to *have* archives.......but no. Alien would know for sure tho.

Glad I could help you out! .

    Banshee Laughter: Fixed. .

Archives are read-only areas that contain topics that were previously posted to one of our forums. You may not add a reply to a topic that is in an archive. Topics in an archive may have been completely removed from the original forum where they were started, or they may still exist in their forums. Usually they are messages that we'd like to have stick around a while for people to read, or they were 'classics' that really don't require new replies, etc.

As for closed/locked topics. Usually they are closed because a) their was a technical problem within the message (something I couldn't fix) b) it involved something clearly against the rules/guidelines poster here c) it was locked in one place, but moved to a more appropriate forum for the topic. In this final case, you'll also see a 'moving truck' icon for a day or two before the locked version has vanished.

Hope I've been of some help. .

Topics aren't closed because they ran out of gas. They're closed because of something that was said that was inapproriate or because something wrong with the topic itself.
