So I can't help but laugh my ass off over this.
    http://www.defendxenforo.org/

A little background if you don't know. :rolleyes_ron:

There is a new script called xenForo that is built by the old vBulletin developers. Well the new owners of vB have filed a claim against xF and apparently some overzealous fans have taken it upon themselves to take care of xF. (isn't that what business plans are for?)

I have a few major problems with this..

    1. who's to say the money donated will even make it to xF
    2. who's going to pay the taxes on the money received?
    3. this just make xF look amateur IMO, xF themselves should take care of any legal cost not their fans
    4. if ppl want to support xF they should BUY MORE LICENSES, not donate to a random group
    5. I'm sure the ppl that made this "defense fund" have good intentions but this doesn't look good at all for anyone.

what are your thoughts on this?
do you agree or disagree with me?

Eh, if they want to "change the world, even just a little bit" as they claim, they should open-source XenForo ... not only can fans then come up with materials that can be used in a legal defense (proving there was no copyright infringement), but the software can be maintained outside the "group of three men".

Closed-source software is so backwards nowadays ... companies still think they have to do it, but often open-source has more merit than closed-source. Of course, an open-source model requires a different business model, but they could still sell turnkey solutions ... or whatever.

That'd be far more efficient than trying to fundraise money that they can use to pay a lawyer. Or it would make more sense then.

To think they're running the XenForo business without a law insurance is comical in some way.

especially since the developers are the same ones that ran vbulletin for years. IMO they should of known better if they didn't have insurance.

Well it looks like this was rather short lived.

    http://www.defendxenforo.org/forum/threads/defense-fund.10/

Hopefully they closed up before to much time was spent on it.
I think they'll have an active xenForo fan forum but what about when the case is over.
I mean you can only play the pitty card for so long before you run out of "big brother" stories.

I wish them luck on their forum, but I'm glad they found out about forming an organization and the taxes involved in all that before they got to fan into it.

    ha, who?
the people that made the group?

I think they had good intentions about the whole thing but they might not of thought out the implications of accepting money
I've found out over the last 5 years what it takes to file a non-profile group and how much of a pain in can be.
They are better off offering a support type site and sending people to the official site.
If xenForo offers some type of affiliate program the defend xen site could make a killing. :)

Yeah the group. The group doesn't have a clue what is going on but will defend the forum software anyway.

What I don't get is the reason behind starting the group. Yes, the courts can seize/freeze bank accounts but any legitimate attorney wouldn't worry about that if they think the case is solid. Once the case gets tossed the accounts are unfrozen and the lawyers get paid.

No matter how you slice it Floris being lead developer on a competing product just looks bad on him. I don't know Floris but it's silly to open yourself up to litigation especially when you don't have the funds to defend yourself.

Are they even incorporated or are they just individual developers scattered across the globe?

I didn't know Floris was helping develop xF, but then again Floris blocked me on Twitter shortly after I sold vBSetup. I'm guessing he didn't see any point in being nice to me anymore since I wasn't running a vBulletin support site.. I could be wrong, but that's who I see it since it's not like I've changed the way I post on twitter since selling..

I'm not sure their status, I would think so, it's rather naive if they didn't.

lol, this all looks to me like those groups making and selling Amiga-related products, it's all closed-source, you never know what's going on behind the scenes, and the developers are selling stuff when they see fit, with no foreseeable schedule, reliable release plan, etc.

I reckon that the group itself is wasting it's time.
