When you need to take action against someone in this way, do you suspend them (temporary ban) or ban them (permanent ban)? And if the ban is only temporary, does the member in question return? Are they active in the community or do they only lurk? Have they learned their lesson or does the trouble continue?

So far I have only had to suspend two users. One was for 6 months and the other was for 3 I think.

Both bans were lifted a while ago, but neither of these two members have returned. It's okay though - I wouldn't expect them to. They ruined their reputation with the community.

To answer your question, I wouldn't permanently ban somebody (other than spammers) unless they really crossed the line. Such a situation has never come up, so I'm not sure exactly what I would do.

3 Strikes and you're out (perma banned) here. 1st time is a warning, second time 7 day ban, third time 30 day ban, and the final time perma ban.

After a warning and two suspensions if you cannot follow the basic rules which is basically just be respectful of your fellow members you're probably never going to follow the rules.

It depends on the situation. If they've violated the rules before they might get the boot permanently. If I think they're capable of changing their behavior I'll only give them a time-out.

The only time i have ever had to ban anyone is for spamming my boards with some very graphic pornography. For the most part if someone breaks the rules of my board they will get a gentle reminder via pm

On Pisoga, depending on what happens I suspend or ban. We have a lot of perma-banned, those are people who have threatened the site and/or hacked. Most of them are people who find their giggles at 4chan and try to be as *cool* as they are, which ultimately, fail.

I use both methods. For less severe situations, I use the temporary ban and for more severe situations I use the permanent ban. But to be honest, I haven't use neither in quite a long time. I have given several infractions, though.

The member in question, when I banned, always returns. Though, he/she cannot login and post. They due tend to read posts and such.

    They are active guests, yep.

After being temporarily banned, they tend to follow the rules. If not, they'll be banned/infraction-worthy again.

I think most people (if they're not spammers) genuinely want to fit into the community and will fall into line once the rules are explained to them.

I almost never ban anyone other than spambots. So far, I haven't had much trouble. I set the rules loosely and the members sometimes tread the odd side of that. My system is quite lenient:

So far, it's worked pretty well.

Yeah, I pretty much have a three strike system. First strike is a slap on the wrist, second strike is a 7 day ban and third strike is a permanent ban. But, me and the staff handles each situation differently.
