Out of curiosity, although it's a helpful article, what are the individual benefits of this not being viewable to guests? Does it increase registrations?

The way I see it, it might actually hurt your registrations.

People want to know how active a forum is when they consider joining it.

That's not to say that you actually need to show them individual usernames.

On one of my forums I've added template conditionals to change people's non-member-visible usernames to "Private", unless of course it's the main admin, in which case it shows her name regardless.

Thats the thing, not many guests are interested in who is on your forum, at least not their names, they want statistical data and hiding the whats going on box for guests allows you to relocate the threads, posts and member count stats to elsewhere if you wish.

On our teen forum we have our stats in the header instead of down there with a big list of users etc. It would be pointless having it at the top AND the bottom.

On some forums I have seen them do the opposite of this with it only shown to guests and not for members. At the end of the day it is all down to personal preference, use it if you wish :)
