    Im not sure if this can be done, which is why I'm asking.
    At the moment the hosting that I have is only been used 1/4 of its potential. Today I noticed you can do things like sub-domains and add-on domains.
    Does this mean I am able to purchase another domain and add it to my hosting package? Is this possible?

    If so, can some one please tell me a bit about how it works etc. Im looking at starting a new forum, but dont want to spend a huge amount of money where I dont have to if I can avoid it, until the forum is up and running and I am happy enough to break the hosting into two.

    Yes you can. Most hosts allow you to host multiple different websites on the same account.

    On all my hosting plan's I have done it. If you don't mind me asking what hosting your with, maybe able to help more.

    A subdomain is sub.maindomain.com. The add-on indicates you should be able to. It usually creates another folder in your home/name/public-dir file. Then it's just pointing the nameservers to the right place.

    OK, so if I do a add-on domain, it will have nothing to do with the website that I currently have on the hosting plan? Im getting excited now :D
    When you ask what hosting I'm with, do you mean company, or what type?

    More for what kind of control panel interface. Each hosting seems to like different ones. On your host homepage check out what comes with your package. If add-on domains are there your good to go.

    Most interfaces are easy to use. The steps vary by though. Commonly if you have a domain ready to go it's easy to test. Just add the domain, edit the nameservers with the registar of the domain. Wait about 15 minutes and it should load up.

    I would suggest you get exact definitions from your provider of what the add-on domain is. If using Cpanel, which is typical, then it will treat a add-on domain like a sub domain.

    The importance of this is in the file structure.

    Ex//

    /public_html/ => mydomain.com

    /public_html/subdomain => subdomain.mydomain.com

    /public_html/addondomain => addondomain.com => addondomain.mydomain.com

    as opposed to:

    /public_html2/ => addondomain.com

    I'm not saying yours will be like the above, but lots of places advertise the addon domains that end up be like above. So you can't really have separate file structures.

    If yours is like what I have described, then you should request WHM, which then allows you to add domainX.com and having separate Cpanel logins.

    Edit: I had actually had some bookmarked threads about this a long time ago.

    It depends on the package as well. Not all providers allow but just 1 domain while they allow unlimited subdomains. Unless you have a premium package. Also check to see how many databases you can have. With a seperate site it's wise to add another database.
