Mod that "Auto-searches" for similar threads....

I was just about to start a thread asking if people register private or not and I thought "I should check and see if there is already one...". Turns out there is so i didn't start a new thread.

Anyways, on another site I visit, we have a mod that brings up 5 threads that are similar to the title after you type it in.
i.e. - "click start new thread, type title, as soon as you move the cursor into the text field it does a quick search and displays 5 threads that are similar to that title.

Anyways, just an idea.

 

Apparently these are very server intensive.

 

I'm not really too interested because I'm not so against having multiple threads about the same subject... especially if the existing threads are much older than the one that would have been created.

So I'd rather leave things the way they are to continue to encourage and welcome new threads.

 

I highly doubt that. This site is huge, (300,000+ members, 1,000,000 + posts) recently had to switch to nginx due to server load being at about 15. They won't even install a shoutbox because of the effect on the server load. The load now is usually below 2.5 with this mod installed. And there is usually about 1000 users on a any given time.

I'll get the exact name and version of the mod if you are interested.

Well, that is why this is a suggestion...

 

We use Cyb's check if already posted hack, works great and only does the search if the user presses go.
