This is one of my biggest pet-peeves:

I get the e-mail notification that a new member has registered on the forum. The "Referrer" field is blank but in the "How Did you Find Us?" box, the user put something like "Jenny's signature link on vB.org".
I always go in and manually add "Jenny" to the "Referrer" field in the new member's profile.

Do you guys do this? Or do you not care?

Sounds a little compulsive to me...

No, I don't go back and add the referrer. If they found the link in Jenny's profile/signature, for example, they weren't referred; Jenny didn't PM Jack and say, "Hey, check out AdminAddict."; Jack took the initiative to take a look and decide to join.

And no, through my reply, you can imply that I don't care.

'Compulsive' is OCD's middle name, 'ya know!

Anyways, I actually disagree with you when you say it isn't actually a referral. If it weren't for Jenny's sig link, the new user wouldn't have found the site (maybe eventually - but not at that specific time). But that was just an example to get my real point across.

I know Compulsive is OCD's middle name, sir. You are one who feels compelled to do certain things, obviously.

I understood your point as well - but I still think you're wrong. Referring somebody, in my eyes, is manually telling them-- recommending them to something.

    And according to Google Define:
Sorry for putting up a debate at an Administrator forum... I like to debate.

You're not alone, Nick - I do the same. I'm a stickler when it comes to even the smallest details.

Wow, that's coincidentally odd, yet very interesting.

I don't find the need to edit somebody's registration form - obviously it was intentional not to enter a certain detail; an optional one, any way.

Well, different strokes for different folks.

Well said! It all depends on the person (and how they like to deal with specific situations).

I've been trying not to let this out, but I can't continue to bite my tongue, nothing offensive any way --

    Are either of you OCD?

I think it's safe to say that a lot of the things Chris and I (and Savage, too) have in common are considerably odd. :p

Well I don't have much in common with others; I am a little too odd.

I find it odd to be on a team where all three of us (Savage, Chris and I) are all fairly equivalent in our OCD issues. Among other things.

I must've missed your post asking that question. Yes, you are correct. :o

Oh, it's about time I guess somebody is OCD and actually get it right.

I guess I need to be a bit more organized and fill in everything completely. But it's just not me to go back to somebody Else's form and make editions.

Like I said, for the umpteenth time, "different strokes for different folks."

Yes, I am the same way. The one exception is when the person that referred the new member has a different username on forum A than forum B. So the new member may not know who they are on forum B. But other than that, just fill it out!

In all my years being online and using forums, I think I've used the referrer field possibly 4 or less times? I don't see the need of it unless there's a contest going on or the person wanted me to put it there.

My guess is that the biggest reason people don't populate the referrer field correctly is because they don't know the referrer's username, or can't spell it in the format it's being used on the forum. To your example I may know that Jenny suggested I check out a very cool forum, but when I get there I type Jenny and nothing comes up, and it isn't until later that I find out Jenny is actually TasmanianTangerine on the forum.

:unhunh: At your choice of username for Jenny, but yes, you're exactly right.
