    ...how do you handle it?

Maybe they deleted something that shouldn't have been deleted. Or suspended someone for something you think they misread. Or something else where they handled a situation in a manner where you would have responded differently.

Do you leave their mod action as is, but privately coach them in how to handle the situation better next time? Do you rectify the situation, making public action (as in reinstating a post/thread/member/etc), but not call attention to it.

I would never want to embarrass a mod and call them out publicly. But at the same time, if they ended up handling a situation in what I think was improper...I'd be caught between a rock and a hard place.

Unless it is something so, soooo bad, I leave the action and talk to them about it and hope that they will undo the action themselves. Sometimes they can't undo something or can't figure out how to undo something and they ask me to do it. But usually, if they do something that I don't agree with, I just talk to them about it and then if they agree with me, they undo whatever they did. If not, I let their action stand. Just remember, it's just a forum.

I was a mod on another site and the admin loved to just go in and undo what the mods did without any explanation. It did not make us mods feel good at all nor make us feel like modding much either if he was just gonna come in and undo whatever we did.

I think it actually depends upon how severe thier actions were, other wise it would stay and just talk about it and try not to repeat another action in the same manner..

The best action is to be cival and supportive of what they did and if it was against your better judgement, then just guide them towards the best way they should go about the action that they made..

I know it is just a forum but it is still your pride and joy and NO admin worth his salt will want a power mad moderator running loose.

Most of the time I support their decisions, only occasionally have I had to reverse a decision I disagreed with. In such cases I've always approached it as me clarifying my instructions on how I wanted the place run. And always privately, you don't want members talking about the drama.

I assume we aren't talking about this happening all the time. If it is, you either have a moderator that isn't following your moderating rules, or your moderating rules are not clear.

Right, not a common occurrence. But along the lines of someone's thread or post being deleted when I thought it was acceptable. Then you get the member pm'ing you saying, "They're just out to get me if that was deleted." and then it just snowballs....

If such a situation were to arise, I'd discuss his/her/their actions in private.

There's absolutely no real need to embarrass a team member publicly, particularly because of a disagreement in moderation action(s). If you feel that a team member made a mistake and/or an inappropriate choice on their part, resolving it with them peacefully and quietly is the best route to take. Hell, as administrators, we make mistakes all of the time. Because of this, I always give team members (i.e. moderators) the benefit of the doubt.

    We're only human. :)

    Yeah all that. :)

I wonder if the real issue is that it isn't always comfortable to have this discussion with a mod. One hopes it isn't confrontational, but one isn't sure how they will respond. Do you have other mods and do you have a read on what their opinion is? Can you initiate a discussion with all the mods to be sure everyone is on the same page?

In the end the admin has to decide on policy, and mods have to agree to support that policy even if they have reservations. If there are enough reservations then it isn't a good match, the moderator is not the right one for that forum.

    Just imo. :)

I just explain to them why I am unhappy and try to ask them why they did such a thing - most things are easy to un-do bans etc
