I'm thinking about buying a preexisting blog related to my own website but I'm not sure how to evaluate the cost?

The site is for sale but it's a make offer deal. Anyhow, it's a small site dedicated to a less popular subject but has a good domain name. It's also at the top of the google search page.

My thoughts is being able to pick it up for cheap and help further develop the site as well as use it for advertising my main website.

    Thanks,

    Ray

I would go off a number of things, mainly its traffic stats from analytics and also off whatever money it makes and how much the domain is worth, how many posts there is, how much work will need done to it if any. There is some general rule about how much a site makes per year and how much you should offer for it but I honestly cant remember it :)

Unless I am missing something really obvious, a blog is (usually) written by 1 or at least a small limited number of people. Once you buy it won't they go away?

I can see a forum with many different people contributing easier to evaluate.

The site isn't really being utilized and it's owned by a person with zero to minimum experience in the subject content. In fact, the owner is actually asking for someone to help with the site. As for me, I don't generally deal in this caliber but I bring to the table roughly 20+yrs of experience in the over all subject matter. So it would be an easy transition for me.

update: I have contacted the guy and he is simply asking more than the site is worth but is willing to do a partnership. I have never done a website partnership and don't know if it's worth getting into?

A partnership could work, but I would want things spelled out in crystal clear terms before entering into one.

I think one of the downsides in your case might be that you would be doing most if not all of the work, but he would probably retain full ownership of the domain name. Which might be fine for your purposes, if your intent is to use that blog to drive traffic to your site.

Once people are referred to your forum from that blog and join, then they in theory would remain on your forum. Maybe view it like an ad campaign as opposed to an 'partnership/ownership of a blog'?
