Did your forum start slowly and then grow faster as time went on (snowball effect), or did you have a big bang of activity starting at the beginning? Or are you completely out of luck and your forum still hasn't taken off? :(

Let's set a number for practical reasons. How long did it take you to reach, say, 100 members?

In the beginning, both Setsou and Bird is the Word were promising. Launch day they were fantastic.

Neither sites have reached 100 members. We have an active user base. I purge members often to ensure all members are active.

Users knew we were launching a site, so we were over 100 on the first day.

It may sound awesome, but as a newbie to running a site and a server, there were a lot of headaches that came along with a fast growing site.

I'm not complaining now, nor was I then, cuz it was a good thing, but it was also very, very stressful!

I did a fair bit of marketing before going live. Spending a long weekend at an event for the subject matter. I helped work registration for the event and handed cards with the URL and name of site. I'm also known in the community so people actually listened when I did my spiel about the site.

    With that known...

100 within 12 hours of going live, 200 in two days, then it settled down. One month later just over 500 and gaining on avg 4-5 new members a day.

Very cool, guys! It took my Linnie forum about one month to reach 100 members. When I was living in the moment, it seemed like a lot and I was very pleased with the outcome. Looking back, it's not that great - but I am in a very unpopular and small niche so I cannot expect much.

We've been growing steadily ever since, with about 4-5 new registrations per day. :)

Good job, Nick. For your niche, that's pretty good. :)

@Chris: Remember CoD4-MW.net and how fast that grew because it was just about the only forum for "CoD4: MW" at the time? That wasn't bad.

My largest forum grew surprisingly fast, post count wise. Registrations were decent, too, but there was a lot of activity from the 30 or so members we'd get a day. Probably more than you'd except for the few visitors we had compared to the size of the forum.

That was fantastic - and a lot of fun. I was continuously impressed with the amount of activity that we were receiving.

It's been going pretty slowly, but several of my forums are over 100 members. I don't think that's a magic number though, it's activity that really matters.

I've got a thread on key statistics, fun to look back on and useful for projecting growth and when the next level of webhosting might be needed.
