I have no idea what to charge for ads on my site. Can you give me some ideas?

Not sure what sort of stats you want to see, so just give you some idea.

Was thinking something like $1 for 1000 impressions? Is this too much, too little?

I have ads top of site and bottom of site, and bottom of each thread.

Thanks in advance for your advice.

I was thinking charging by impressions might be better? More people might sign up?

I've never been a fan of impression based pricing. As an advertiser how would I know someone is not popping on the site once a day or so and hitting the F5 key for 5-10 min driving impressions to false levels.

I've always thought that if you have advertisers their best value is not from a banner, all that does keep a name in front, but the real value is the ability to interact with the site members. This is especially true on a site where the advertiser is pedaling goods or services that are inline with the theme of the site. For example on my own MINI Cooper based site I only accept advertising (besides the google ad block) from players in the space and I provide them with the tools allowing them to be active members on the site. It is from these interactions that the sales are made keeping the advertisers for the long haul.

My main competitor now had gone to an impression based model where the advertisers gets x # of impressions for $Y each month. While the number looks high in effect by around the 25th of the month the banners pretty much change en masse to Google Ads served banners. Hence the value of the advertising is lost for a week or so every month.

To sum up I think the best model on forums is to keep the advertiser engaged and deal with growth by small price increases over time. They grow from being a part of the site, the site grows from them being a part of the site too.

30 cents per month per average daily absolutely unique visitor.

I do have facilities for members, ie posters, to have a special signature, shows in a fancy box under their posts. But as you guys aren't members i wasn't sure what to suggest pricing wise you see.

I just use a standard fixed monthly rate instead.

I show the sponsors the site stats and they can decide for themselves if they think it's worth it. That way, it's nice and simple --> $XX dollars per month. That way, it doesn't matter on false impressions or clicks and they know how much they are spending each month :).
