When a domain name expires, approximately how long after the expiry date will it become available for purchase by somebody else?

    Thanks

    45-90 days.

Be ready to snap it up ASAP especially if its been used previsously with traffic (Domain mongers will snap it up). At that point its easily 1+ years.

That would be terrible. An old partner and I used this domain two years ago. Since then, it has been the domain that I use for my main e-mail account. It's the one I use when I sign up on forums and just about everything else on the Internet. I mean it was my MAIN, numero uno, e-mail account.

I knew it was going to expire soon, so I contacted the aforementioned partner and asked him if he was going to renew; I said if not, then I would be glad to take it over and maintain it myself. That was two weeks ago... he never replied.

The domain expired two days ago, and I haven't been able to get into contact with him since, and I am losing dozens and dozens of e-mails by the hour. I'm sure I've lost a hundred by now.

If I do get into contact with him within [how many days], will he be able to renew it? In other words, is it in a locked dormant state for 45-90 days, or can he renew it anytime before that period? Or what?

I hate being stuck in situations like this.

He does have the option to renew it up to 45 days after expiration, as far as I can remember.

I dont recall the exact time he'll have, but Peggy is correct its any where from 30-45 days.

I think it goes like this

1-45? days its expired with owner chance to renew
46-60 days its expired and marked for deletion
60-90 its deleted and open to register.

Thats all of the top of my head, and I can't remember exact time frames.

You might contact the register also. I've had domains expire and the next thing I seen was they bought them.

The reason for this delay is to give customers a chance to repurchase this. MOST reasonable providers will give you a chance to do so in a reasonable period of time.

    Case in point, namecheap:
I recently let two of my domains expire (wasn't using them, etc). Their expiration date was 10/25 , and I was able to access them in their renew/reactivate domains section. If you use them, check out that section, and go to reactivate domains. They charge no extra or hidden fees, it's a simple one year renewal fee for the domain, which is yet another great thing about that company!
