THE #1 FREE, OPEN SOURCE BULLETIN BOARD SOFTWARE

This is from their website, here is another great community for phpbb, phpbbhacks which is ran by our friends at iFroggy.

I started off on phpBB 2.x series and wouldn't of wanted it any other way.
I've thought about starting a phpBB site just to freshen up on the options.
I still prefer it over any other free forum script. :cool2:

I have ran one of those forums before but not from an open source installation. It was one of those free instant boards that would be activated after you had signed up for one. They are pretty awesome.
I got mine from forumer.com which is basically a vB ran forum that allows people to download and apply for either IPB or phpBB boards for free.

I haven't touched phpbb, since phpbb2 gold came out. Around then I had already moved to vB.

Phpbb 1.x was a lot better than vB2.x? or 3.x at that time.

Things have sure changed a lot over the time.

Oh really, I never touched phpbb1, 2 was how I learned what I know now.
I'd like to setup a phpbb3 site just to see the upgrades process, it was a royal pain updating a 2.0.x board 5 years ago..lol

Yeah phpbb1 was amazing of it's time. It was as good as vB and UBB were at that time. I remember it was the best alternative to vB and tons of people had mods for it.

Later on vB3.x I think came out and it took the market. After that phpbb2 came out and it wasn't too bad.

The thing that pushed me away from phpbb2 and 3 is the lack of security updates. The lack of mods and skins. That time there was not much of it, and vB had lots of mods, skins and ALWAYS had security patches within 24 hrs of notice.

Had friends of mine who ran their own phpbb forums. Pity they were all arseholes.
Ezboards were pretty good until they made it something you had to pay for through those trashy and dodgey affiliation programs they had.
