Encouraging Posting

What methods do you use to encourage posting on your forums? Do you create lots of new threads yourself?

I kinda feel stupid if I was to create say 5 threads in a row, would you suggest spacing them out over the course of a week perhaps?

Any ideas to encourage posting though would be good.

me and the other staff create a few threads and get discussion going
