I added some new affiliate ad banners to the site...well I talked Nick into doing it. Anyhow, I've seen on some forums where they start a thread pointing out affiliates and asking the people to buy from these sites since they support your site. Do you think this is a good idea or just tacky?

no, i let the members find them on their own.

although some ads on the forum cause a bit of discussion, like once on my old forum, there was an advert at the top of the page, that was a dating site for people with std's...that caused a lot of laughs  (i didnt put the ad there btw)

what site added affiliates? AA, or your forum ?

some forums have a thread for announcing and listing their advertisers (and encouraging folks to use them). I think that's fine, and I look through the lists out of curiosity.

No I don't let members know about them, if they are looking they will see the link or banner and they can check them out. Now if someone paid for the link and part of the agreement was to post a thread pointing out the affiliate then I would do it. But that's only happened once.

We send an email out to all the forum when we take on a new sponsor, as they're firms they really will want to know are now part of the forum. Never had a complaint from an active user (I get the odd old member replying with "STOP" thinking it's automated, but when I check their posts or activity they're often less than 3 and from a couple of years ago so I remove their accounts for them).
