A member of my forum has put forth a suggestion that entails the addition of a new forum or sub-forum to our already-massive list of sections. I think we do have enough discussions and threads that would warrant the addition of this new section, but I'm not sure. I hate the idea of adding it, it being un-used, and then having an empty section. I can always remove it, but I'd rather make the right decision the first time.

What kind of considerations do you make before adding a new section to your forum? Do you have set criteria or requirements?

I just do it and if it is popular, keep it, if not, consolidate it.

If the request is reasonable and the suggested section is appropriate, I'll generally make the change without hesitation. However, before doing so:

    • Can the suggested category/section be combined with an already existing entity to prevent confusion and/or excess "index length"? What are the advantages of adding said section?
I've had to deal with some rather unreasonable reactions due to the addition of new categories/boards. While some members cherish and take advantage of the addition(s), others tend to publicly show their dislike of change and in turn, take it out on others (rudely and inappropriately). It's rather odd. :uhh:

I would look back a month or so and count how many times that particular subject (forum topic requested) was discussed.

I start a thread in our moderators forum once the need (or request) for another forum has come up. Then, if we are all in agreement, I set it up.

On my forums there really has to be a good amount of threads on the subject before I add a new forum. If the subject somes up at least 3 times a week that when I will give it the thought of adding sub-forum.
