It was probably phpBB. I didn't stay with them particularly long thanks to the pain of installing mods as a junior administrator.

The first forum software that I personally chose was myBB and still with it today.

Before that I was an administrator in support of the forum owner who used in the following order phpBB2 then phpBB3 then he went to SMF 1 when I took over the forum I went to myBB.

Excluding hosted stuff, the first one I used was YaBB SE (anyone remember that?).

At the time, IPB, YaBB SE and phpBB were pretty much your only choices as far as free PHP-based forum software was concerned. I think XMB might have existed back then as well, but it's never been very widely used. I never liked phpBB because everyone was using it and didn't really care for IPB either.

Self-hosted: phpBB. Before that I was using a free hosted Yabb.

I think this was asked a while back. At the time I would have swore it was ibv3*(ikonboard) at the time. Since then I have uncovered some old storage disk and realized I migrated (before importers) from BlazeBoard to Ikonboard. I even still have the old scripts sadly.

I just had one of my old servers, in fact the very first co-located server I put online, sent back to me. It was a 4U Dual Xeon 500Mhz with 4 gigs of ram. A real power house in the day and cost me an arm and a leg to build. The processors alone were almost 2 grand. On it I found my original forum which ran on Matt Wrights wwwboard. I fired up the box and went down memory lane. It was strange to see how active that forum was 17 years ago when forums were in their infancy.

On the box was also a copy of the crashed databases that caused me to restart from zero my biggest forum 3 times. I am actually going to see if I can recover some of it and archive it as a sort of a what we were then. My users would get a kick out of it.

phpBB.. for a day or two. Then I had enough.

Tried two other softwares, the last being SMF. I've never looked back.
