Disabling Quick Reply

    Anybody who spends any amount of time on the MacRumors forums knows that they have the Quick Reply feature disabled. This is by far one of the most convenient and desired features (for me) in a forum. I was searching through some old threads over there to see why it's not enabled (as I'm sure I'm not the first to desire it) and found this:

    This is rather interesting reasoning. I'm not sure if it holds water or if it's just a fallacy. What do you guys think?

    I have it disabled on a few of my sites for that very reason. Sometimes people will post without really thinking. Especially if it is a pasionate discussion. That etxra few seconds could make them think if they really want to post at all. Sometimes when one posts in haste they don't say things in the correct way.

    I always love forums that have the quick reply feature enabled. It makes replying to topics easier.

    I never liked quick reply because it does not have some feature avalable.That is available in the standard reply.

    The quick reply is getting better than what it was. I remember when it was first seen as hack for vbulletin 2. It was just a regular text box. Of course the full editor didn't have much more back them either.

    Any means of making it take longer for a member to post may make him put more thought into what he wants to post, or if he should really post it. And one of these "means" besides disabling quick reply is making the registration or login process take longer. As implied, there is a balancing act to be had between convenience in posting, and discouragement of substantless posting. But the balancing act may be made more delicate depending on the type of people being attracted to the forum, or being accepted into it. The latter point may feed into the idea a few forum administrators have of selective or paid registration. Of course, not many forum administrators can afford to be selective, so the more subtle methods meant to influence posting behavior is preferred.

    That said, yay quick reply.
