Join some other forums and see if you can help there for a while.

things got a little better, it was just going through a quiet stage, although now we are back to quiet cause we had server problems and the forum was down for 12 hours.....hopefully members will come on tomorrow-it was 10pm when it came back online, so most members are probably in bed

Start a contest, send out a community newsletter or wake-up call, post your own interesting news, make a site announcement. There's lots of little ways to promote some posting.

If you're really desperate, create multiple fake accounts and have them interact with each other to at least provide the illusion of activeness. If there's nothing going on to begin with, people will be less inclined to participate.

You need dedicated members to constantly post and make the forums active, otherwise no one will join or post.

Post, post, and post again and again. Don't ever stop even if you think you're all alone doing it. Do this as well as promote and the other suggestions the members above gave. Do that and you'll have a great forum.

If things get quite open a thread on a controversial topic or something that's hot in the news. You'd be surprised how many people join in.

Contests are definitely a good way to get users active.

Contests are indeed a good way, also having a new and more attractive skin does wonders! I'd also advertise on Facebook and Youtube a bit.

    Post, post and post ;)

When my forums get quiet, I make it a mission to put 5-10 new topics in each main niche section each and every day I login at least until activity starts again :)

A forum will only get active if there is plenty to talk about :D and ONLY you can make that possible ;)

things got better, forum has grown a lot since i posted this.

get 70-100 posts a day now. and im happier now because i no longer keep track of our page views and stuff, as i was getting obsessed and checking them several times an hour.

That's one heck of an improvement. I bet once you stopped obsessing over pageviews things started to liven up.

Keep promoting, ask for post exchanges, ask for friends to join, but don't give up!

Sometimes as the admin you have to drive the conversation, put interesting content or thought provoking questions to prompt responses out of members.

My forum has been dead lately as well... I moved it from one web hosting company to another last weekend and it was down for 5-10 hours. Since then my community has really died down...

What do you recommend I do? I only started my forum a month ago, but I have about 10 loyal posters who were always posting prior to my server switch.
