My former moderators seem to want to establish a competition forum.

They do not post any more on my forum except some minor bad posts which usually are not enough for banning them

Should I ban them from my forum anyway?

I would take the high road and not ban them unless they outright break the rules. Now this is not to say I'm a complete nice guy. I would issue infractions and people receiving "X" amount of infractions would receive a week ban and so on.

Let em be if they are not breaking the rules.
I have seen a site go down from banning a competitor. Over 1 million posts and a contributing competitor they banned, they lost over 100 members overnight.

I will then wait what happens next.
I will not allow links to competition boards from members who were former moderators.
But as there is no competition forum at the moment, then I will not take any action.

They keep questioning my decisions in public and write bad about me on other places. What would you do?

Depends on who 'they' are. I will it is your general membership. My input:
    1. One approach is to sit, do nothing, and do not communicate. While that may seem like a really bad idea that approach actually works for a really long time.
    2. The other approach which I would use is 'full disclosure', when things come up openly answer them.
    3. The worst approach in my humble opinion would be anything in between, where you seem to have full disclosure, but not really. That creates a atmosphere of distrust.

What about the approach to not allow them to diss me on my forum (consequently delete their posts, ban them if they do not follow this rule), but they can write anything on any other platform.

If you are asking me. If a member of your forum typed "Hey Adam you are a ____, and so is yo mama" type post, then you deleted & banned them, chances are they would go to the other forum and openly complain.

Eventually people get over that, it is not a huge deal, or least it should not be.

You sure your name isn't PlopCat?!
I went/going through Exactly the same thing you are. I infracted. Nope, didn't work. They came back & did the same thing. I had to ban them eventually in a very short amount of time. Every single thing you said is me.
Site took a huge drop like MordyT said above but the trouble makers are not there anymore and I'm happy as I was spending Most of my time on them. Be wary about banning. In time it will settle down but there's only so much a owner can take. I look at it this way. Would you have someone in your house talk to you like that? Pretty easy when you put it in perspective.

I am going the "strong leadership" approach now, and I think it works out. The best part of it is, i feel better now: More in power, more that I influence the community.

The community took a big hit after I demoted the moderators and when I also did not take part in the community for some time. Now after I came back and play "strong leadership" the community improves. Even some old moderators try to do nice after confronting them directly ("ex-moderator, do not ask what I can do for you, what can YOU do for this community - what did you actually do the last months?". Very few do nice now, anyway.

Maybe disable Pms etc.. If they have said they are going to create a better forums they might just start nicking your members. I wouldn't ban them for reasons already said.

I wouldn't ban them, after all they haven't broken your rules (if you don't forbid that in your rules ofcourse). All you have to do is make sure they don't start PM'ing your members asking them to switch, in that case then you may have a right to ban or limit their forum permissions.

My former moderators were telling other members to cut down their involvement in my community due as they were very concerned to the direction the community would go in general.

Most former moderators are now inactive, I banned a few and the rest is very moderately active. They do not help out other members any more, they only care about getting their stuff done and taking care of the friendships they established on my community.

To sum it up: I am very happy having "terminated" my team and am looking forward with a good feeling.

I had a huge argument on my site and it caused a major split. even though i was right to complain, I let my anger get the best of me and wound up splitting

    Team A:
Me and my loyal members(about 10 people stayed)

    Team B:
2 members and about 10 other people left with them

Unfortunately given the fact that the 12 who left were also active members, i had to bite my tongue, swallow my pride and apologize to get them to come back since they tried to create 2 competitive sites(Within the 3 day period of them rage quitting)

    What's funny is...
their first failed site was a copycat...they literally used the original name of my site

and the second one was DOA
