I have been messing around with a couple different forum softwares trying to get away from vbulletin and IPB. I stumbled across Vanilla Forums which seems to be really good. I noticed there is over 450 add-ons which is pretty appealing. Vanilla 2 RC3 is the latest version and some of the Vanilla 2 add-ons are a little buggy which is expected. The biggest turn-on I noticed is the forum structure focus's on discussions mainly which are thrown right in your face which is awesome. There are a lot of things missing however (individual post count, smilies, signatures, etc..) but there are plugins that allow you to add these features. Anyways, I was just looking for some feedback if anyone has any..
I have never seen the point of Vanilla. I understand that it was designed around the idea that not everyone needs the same features, but when it gets to the point of having to install addons just to get "basic" functionality (PM system, emoticons, signatures, etc.), I think it's best just going with something else. Sure, there will always be features that you will never use, but I'd much prefer a forum with most of the features I want built in than a radical one that requires dozens of plugins to accomplish the same thing.
I'm beginning to really like Vanilla. For one I like the way the data is presented. The forum list main page is just too dated. For me the first thing I hit when I visit a site is the unread threads link. With vanilla the unread are presented as soon as you hit the main page. I have a test site up and have been playing with for a couple weeks. I like the fact that you get to choose what you need as addons. It cuts way down on the bloat. Is it extra work? Sure, but, in the end you get only the features you want.
Is this the forum you're all talking about? Vanilla - Free, Open-Source Forum Software I've heard of it but never looked into it. I should, doesn't hurt to check it out.
I've got Vanilla setup at All Questions - Just Debate Us I imported the vbulletin database from a site I closed last year to use as a test bed. I moved it to an unused domain to play with in the open. I love the simplicity of it.
