Well this is a hard one, generally you should have something planned out about how your forum will be beofore you start it. But there are many things you can do, have a nice theme, banner, a nice layout, and interesting forum posts.

Well, for starts, use unique names for boards, make sure you have appropriate content, and give rewards for posters/members. A unique design would be ideal too.

WOW! That is really good looking theme. As side from the advice given to you above me. I would say to post more frequently as admin. Members like a admin that's always on the site.

I used to run a "general" forum, called The Rogue Forums (I have since sold it, and it has been absorbed into a much larger forum network). We also had a kick- Sci Fi. TRF won quite a few awards in its day, due to our general/sci-fi direction. Perhaps you should find a sub-category of general topics, perhaps graphics or gaming? Politics? And add that to your recipe.

Have an entire section devoted to your "kicker," while still leaving plenty of space for other general topics.
