In the forum management world, we get the occasional members that screw up multiple times and make their ways to what some call the "shit list."

Once someone's on your shit list, or the community's shit list, can they ever get off?

Sure they can! They can redeem themselves by acting proper with good behaviour. It will take a while though to regain back trust, without question.

    This.

Except in extreme cases (1:1000 people) where it becomes time wasted over and over.

Sure it's possible. The ones that never get off though are the ones who try to force nature against its will and try to get off the list by vocally redeeming themselves.

The only way for a person to redeem his/her-self is to act properly; not say "I'll be good from now on if you just say 'we're cool now'"... (which isn't uncommon, apparently).

Trouble is, when they can then come back onto the forums, and they can freely post. That can be a bit worrisome no matter how closely they are watched by the staff.

I agree with some of the upper posts, you can get off the shit list with showing respect and being a good person.

Yeah I think you can get off their shit list but usually there will never be the same trust again. I surely wouldnt trust someone on the forums fully if they were previously trolling, even if they did say sorry etc. Once someone does something wrong on your forum I believe they can never be trusted exactly the same like you did beforehand.

its the old saying from way back and unrelated to computers or forums

-- it takes 2 days to get a bad name and 2 years to lose it --

and even that might be optimistic

For me it really depends on the situation. But yes, in most cases, they can get off the list.

For me, it depends on what you did to get yourself on my "shit list" to begin with.

The old adage "time heals all wounds" doesn't always hold true.

I personally allow people back based on the original behaviour and whether their current posting and intelligence/maturity seems greater than back then. For example, a minor troll or someone who was in a bad mood for a short time might be allowed back shortly after being banned, while there are some trolls that have done things too against the rules for this to be considered (examples include the mass multiple account spammer troll that sent death threats to someone, anyone who posted illegal/adult content and generally persistent trolls, these people are never allowed to return under any circumstances).

No, my family is bad about holding a grudge...well my mother is anyhow lol

I honestly don't know about this one. It just seems like it depends on the situation.

Hey all. Just curious here. Are you folks speaking about the vBulletin mod called "shit list" or are you talking about your own personal shit list in your head of people you don't like?
If you are speaking of the vBulletin mod could someone please direct me to it. I have been looking all over for it but can't seem to find it. I use to have it but lost it in a hard drive format gone awry.

I believe they're talking more about the personal list, granted if they've rubbed one person the wrong way, it's usually not that hard to rub everyone else the wrong way.

I've never used an actual mod to keep track of 'those types' on my forums, I prefer to do things manually, so I'm afraid I can't be much help on that one...

Thanks Static. Actually the "shit list" mod I was referring to doesn't keep track of those people per sey. It's a mod that creates a new member group. You can place trouble makers into this new user group instead of banning them. The group has settings where you control the group members... umm.. well the best word I can think of is accessibility, to your forums. You can set it to load pages very slowly (you can adjust the load time manually), force members to get bogus "busy server" messages, send members to a totally different page than the legit page that links go to, and various other nefarious little tricks... It's designed to kind of teach trouble makers a lesson and hopefully alter their behavior without banning them outright.

Now, some forum owners notify their members of the use of the "shit list" mod and why they use it, which was my case, so their members know ahead of time and will know if they have been placed on the list and why. Others keep the list a secret for their own reasons.
I found it a very useful tool for keeping our forums civil and for taming unruly members. It gave the members a chance to redeem themselves while still being able to use the forums, while at the same time being treated to a bit of their own medicine so to speak.
I can't remember where I got it from as it has been a few years since I ran forums. I'm setting up some new forums and was hoping to find this mod again.

    Ditto all that above!

We had a serious troll we tolerated for far, far too long, left over from more lenient moderating days. Troll was warned that one more violation was banning - got themselves banned - then emailed a year later asking for re-admittance. Person owned up to her terrible attitude, told some of her personal story and the profound changes she had been making in her life. I let all the mods weigh in with the caveat that we were not letting her in if anyone thought it was likely she'd just be banned again, not fair to the other members to travel that road twice. They thought she was sincere. She is now one of the forum's stalwart members, kind to newbs and a good contributor. This was a case of a real personal change, not just toeing the line under threat of sanctions.
