"New Thread" inside of thread?

I've seen some forum scripts that have a "New Thread/Topic" button inside of actual threads, next to the "New Reply" button. Do you find this to be useless? I've never used it, so I wonder if anybody else actually uses this button from inside of threads.

I find this to be a bit on the annoying side.

I fail to see why one would go out of his/her way to post a new thread by going into an already existing topic and (quite literally) clicking a button that was located in a much easier, more logical place to start with. If you have the desire to create a new topic, why go in to an already existing one?

Well I don't think that is its purpose. I think this is their line of thinking: Say I'm inside a thread reading about something. This topic sparks an idea/question that I would like to ask, but it's semi-unrelated, so I need to go create a new thread. Having the button inside the thread is easier than having to exit the thread to make the new one.

Nonetheless, I find it to be annoying and have yet to use it - I've learned to "cancel it out" upon seeing such an icon.

That sounds weird. Almost like a set of blog comments where people can comment on a comment, and subsequent people go down that comment path. Other people comment on the other comment paths.

    Blog

    comment1 about blog
    comment2 about blog
    comment3 about blog comment2
    comment4 about blog comment3

Well IP.Board has it so I figure it's still used by many.

the only problem is when members press new thread instead of reply...but even then i just merge the threads together

I have hacked it into vBulletin since I started using vB in 2004, and will always continue to do so.

The problem I see with it is that its confusing to new forum users (less experienced), and they hit that and post in the existing forum instead of the forum that their topic should be in.

I used the new thread button from the post page just today on an ipb site,
and I actually had added it to my vBulletin site when I was running it as well.
I think it's pretty useful myself, but maybe others don't feel the same.
