I considered posting this in misc or WebmasterAddict as it's kind of silly and somewhat off-topic, but I as you can see I didn't. Have you ever said or talked about anything related to forums in real life? Have any real life gear with forum related logos or terms on them? I honestly don't think I've ever even said "vBulletin" aloud besides saying it just to say it, lol. I could never imagine talking about some even more specific things like "vB options in the Admin CP" or "sticky thread", etc.
I occasionally talk about with some forum-forward family members and friends, but other than that, it stays online. And, these subjects rarely come up in conversation.
There are very few people that know about my addiction to creating and managing discussion forums (in real life) - if I were to mention this to friends, they'd give me some sort of weird, contorted facial expression.
My dad wanted to make a forum with IPB, I told him to use vBulletin. He downloaded phpBB... So I think this counts as talking about forums in real life?
Same - I can't say people don't know that I do this kind of stuff, but they don't know much about it and I've definitely never had a conversation with anyone about it. It would be weird to have a friend as into it as I am. "Hey, want to come over and work on our vBulletin forum?"... lol.
Not generally, but I do try to explain to my family what I'm up to. If I'm ever incapacitated I want them to at least have a vague understanding of what needs doing.
Yeah, my family doesn't support anything I do online... so no. My friends like to 'show me off' to some of their friends categorizing me as a 'wonderful' designer. I think it's too much. ._.
not really, cause i keep my online life seperate from my family. when i met up with someone online, and we talked about forums, it felt weird!!!!! i did talk with my sister about forums when she made one of her own for her class at school-but it only lasted a few weeks. and there was when my sister found out that that her friends mum posted on one of the forums....that was weird
I discuss forums with my girlfriend on a daily basis, with my brother now and then and rarely with my mum. Other than that I dont really mention them to anyone.
I don't feel kind of comfortable talking about the online things I do, as I can't explain myself in simple and common words So I always end up giving an stupid explanation of what I do like "I just make some codes", or "I use sort of a system to run the emm... community?" LOL EDIT: but I really hope I someday find someone to talk about online things would be interesting (specially if the other person knows about it)
I think I'm like you a little bit, in that I am much different in the "real" world than online. It has a lot to do with my friends and people I'm usually around, but I've never even mentioned the word "forum" aloud. As much as I'd love to, that would only happen in my imaginary world where everything is perfect. It would be my dream to find someone like me, who's not a complete nerd and has a life, yet knows much about online and computer related things. Ah, that will be the day. My family of all people are especially out of the loop when it comes to the Internet and technology in general. My Mom still doesn't even know howto use a DVD player properly.
I talk to people about my online stuff all the time. I'm at the computer most of my day, so it's a big part of my life. My 10 yr old son understands what I'm talking about more than anyone else does tho, lol.
While I have not used forum terms in real life much, I have sometimes used internet speak in real life, much to the confusion of others (you know, like saying LOL in normal speech). I also used language from another site I visit in normal writing.
yeah, i have said lol out loud...and also when my little sister was making a mess i told her "stop that or i will ban you!"
I've used the word forums out in RL. Amongst my family and friends. I'm in a tech heavy environment, so most know of, have participated, forums. Even some of my own lingo makes sense to them. ehl O el With my personal site, it's been a great challenge getting family members to actually use the site. Forums there are not very active, but I don't really expect them to be. It's like one of those habit things really. You have to be comfortable, you have to know a little bit about what things mean in the online place vs. maybe what you would do "out in public". I think alot of people are hung on facebook, tbh. That is now becoming the online place to share yourself....w/o anonymity, for the most part. So yes, I've used forum related terms in real life, home and work. :woohoo:
When you mention forums where I work people tend to think of this definition of a forum: an assembly, meeting place, television program, etc., for the discussion of questions of public interest. When I mention the designing they immediately think of blogging or facebook. We deal to much with coding and data management. Most of em don't even touch a computer outside of work. Not to mention most of us remember dos. So if I actually speak to someone that thinks of the community software first it's usually someone half my age.
