Was it just me, or was this site down for about half the day?

Is there any reason for this @Brandon?

I missed a hosting payment and they took 6 1/2 hours to enable my sites again after payment.
Apparently there was an issue with the hard drive, then an issues with apache.. idk but I was not a happy camper.

I've purchased new hosting from KnownHost and will begin the migration of my sites this weekend.

Oh, also I didn't get an alert that all of my sites where about to be shut off, I only found out after the fact when they emailed me to me me know I was past due.

So far I've been happy with KnownHost. There are a few threads from others who are using them and the general feedback is good.

They appear to be using the same billing system as Burst.net and with them they had a 3 strikes system; the initial invoice, a "reminder" #1, a "reminder" #2, and then cut-off. So far with KnownHost I've only gotten up to reminder #1. :D

Missed A-T today! :) Glad you're back up and running. KnownHost is awesome, enjoy!! Did you go for one of their VPS plans, or dedicated?

This really tears the fork out of ones pants.
All the effort and money they expand to gain new customers, and they cannot even give their current customers a little leeway.

Too many times their first reaction is to close the site down. A email or call would show they were sincere, But no! they have to use the big stick immediately.

Have they been taking lessons in diplomacy and customer care from the VB school of customer training?

Which one is it, maybe a little free publicity would help them to see that their customers are their first priority.

I went for the solid state VPS for $35, it should be plenty for us and my other sites.
I want to redo my hosting packages that I have all my sites ordered under, also I need to clean up some old database backups that are on the old server.
I'll move a few sites over before moving Admin-Talk.com over, I'll let you guys know but there should be no downtime during the move if we do things correctly.

All sites fit under <15GB storage ? wow lucky you :) Last count for me combined site(s) data for me is tipping 600GB (inclusive of backups).

Yup, Admin Talk is the largest with about 6GB right now.
I'll have about about 6 GB of free space once everything is on the new host.

You should sign up for DNSMadeEasy also. Makes moving servers simple.

I host with softlayer on a dedi, we have around 45 sites on it. We have had some downtime but nothing a reboot won't fix.

I'll have to check that out later.
I'm going to setup custom name servers like ns#.brandonsheley.org.
I've wanted to do that forever but never have taken the time to figure it out.
It seems much simpler on KnownHost, I'm liking the way this is setup already compared my old host.
I'll right up a review after I get off my sites of that host. :evillaugh:

I'll be moving my blog over as a test this weekend, then the rest of the smaller ones and then Admin Talk last.
I doubt I'll get Admin Talk this weekend but we'll just see how tonight goes. I'm going to help a buddy do some patch work on a "sprung floor"..so that'll be interesting.

One thing I LOVE on the new host is SSH access.. so much easier

I'd also suggest you make sure you don't go over the 2TB traffic allowance, which is fair and ample considering the price. I say be careful, because Knownhost charges $1.00 per GB of extra traffic, should you go over the allowance and that is an incredibly high price for traffic. It should actually be in the $0.05 - $0.12 range. I'd also make sure it is clear what happens, when you go over the allowance, because in their terms, they state they might also just shut your sites down. Not cool at all.

You can do that through DNSmade easy. It is actually...easy haha

It should be really simple to move the sites over. Just use the cPanel transfer. You have ROOT access to both servers...should be a few clicks and then you update the IP with the DNS service and done.

Let me know if you need any help...and I apologize for the bad service you received with the last host :(

So i take it you are relying solely on web hosts's free backups and not doing any backups of your own ? 6GB free space left over doesn't leave much room for your own set of backups. Never just rely on web hosts for backups - have your own set as well ;)

Very true, I'll make sure I have room for database backups.
It looks like I have this forum and 3 blogs setup that I need to host unless I'm forgetting a site. I should have plenty of room and if I need more space I can always add it later for a few bucks.

He could just back the sites up manually and download them to his desktop/laptop computer. Not all backups need to be stored on the hosting account with your site.

I rather take manual backups and keep them on a external drive on my pc.

I have used https://www.comcure.com/ in the past for backups. Pretty simple to setup and manage file and database backups

I may move this site over tonight, or at the very least I'll do a test transfer.

Also after cleaning up the test and dev databases I had setup here, the site and database is down to 3.3GB, I've setup an account for 10GB, should be plenty of room for backups. :)

Would the backups be in a highly compressed form and so take up little room.

I have one small blog to setup on the new host and then I'm shooting to move Admin Talk over Thursday the 24th.
