Nice article, this is also very true.
I hate joining forums with pop-ups.

All so true, although people with good sense don't use the ones that pretend to be windows. And if you have to resort to stopping people from clicking off by brining up a window then your're showing signs of illegitimacy in you and your product.

Ad block blocks all these types of ads, so I don't have any problem, but you're absolutely right.

Similarly to you I also use Adblock, but personally I feel I've been driven to it. If ads some ads weren't so intrusive in the first place I would never of installed it.

I have no problem with webmasters placing ads as I realise they need to make their money somehow (as do I), but it's the constant popups ect that I object to.

ohhh don't I just hate pop up ads, I mean you are busing trying to type in something or navigate through the page and pop, there it is, pop, you being directed to another page that you never intended to go to.

Half of these ads are out of your control even if you want to remove them. I'm pretty sure most ad networks use these advertisements and disallow you to disable one advertisement without disabling the whole thing together. That's why I recommend Google ADS as they use safe ads only.

As a Webmaster when I browse a site I don't mind the odd pop up, I know it's their way to make some money and pay their server fees. But when you get a pop up every other page click or every 5 minutes etc then that's just really bad.
If your guna have them on your site then at least set them to once every 24 Hours.

An interesting article. I find it really irritating if the website has a constant flow of pop up advertisements distracting from a content. And far more irritating kind of advertisement is on exit pop up. Why would the website want to confirm I am exiting the page since I have already clicked the red X.

Lol. We all complain about popup ads, but I for one will continue to use them because they work. I've stopped using hard popups and now use lightbox popups, but I still use them nonetheless.

Yep, I have that on Firefox and since some of the websites I visit depend user visibility in order to pay it's members I find that using Chrome gets around this issue. Now, Chrome has it's pop up blocker as well integrated but at least the majority of normal ads are visible to allow them to earn from my visits. As my own choice though I'd rather not ad the pop up option for bringing in traffic only because it's such a big deterrent these days. However, if they were integrated within the website making it less intrusive that I wouldn't mind at all.

Any kind of intrusive ad drives away visitors. I also hate any kind of information that hovers over the page. Things like offers in order to get your email address. That just drives me nuts.

I read your last article where you talked about some things we should refrain from doing in our blog. It was really well done. Allow me to link it and share your article on my blog. I think my readers will benefit from your mind-blogging piece that you have put up here.

I haven't perused this one though. Will do it later on when I come back from work. Cheers :)

one of my biggest frustrations with IP board is integration of the ads into the site. I won't do any of the intrusive ads listed above which leaves me stuck with just leaderboards and wide sky scraper.

I've found that intrusive ads are generally not worth what you are earning from them as they often drive traffic away from your site. I tried a pop up ad on my main site and after I received payment removed the ad, users simply didn't want to be on the site when there was a pop up vs no pop up.
