I'd say he's confused because you quoted his post and clearly didn't read what you'd quoted judging by your reply...

Carlos, Vb still works so making the switch will be a difficult decision for me and others. Yes, you say xf is great and I don't disagree, but you don't own a forum that has millions of posts like a lot of us do here. I own several million plus post forums and making that move would be very costly and time consuming. You own a 8000 post forum and that was an easy decision for you. This is what dj has been trying to tell you. If/when the time comes that vb is no longer a viable software(which it still is in vb 3.8.7 and vb 4.2.1) I will of course have to make that move. Until then, I have no plans on moving.

I have no idea why you decided to drag me into your little fits, I have made no mention of you or your posts, but you decide to have a go at me anyway, not really a very smart move - says a lot about your precious "intelligence". From reading your posts you sound like spoilt 10 year old girl having daily tantrams.

While XenForo is taking massive steps to close the gap of missing features, its still lacking a lot of functions that vbulletin websites have. Note that Shawn created a shitload of addons to make XenForo meet his demands. Not only for his special needs, but also common functionality needs. If Xenforo 1.3 would implement Shawns addons and the top 20 feature requests, then Xenforo will a lot easier to migrate to. Until then a lot of webmasters will need many dozens of addons to be able to migrate.

IPS might pull a big fat rabbit out of its hat with IPS4. It seems they intent to.

I did read what he replied. My comment(s) still applies.
I don't care what you think, dude. I'm not a girl. I'm a GUY. :D Go back to your little cubicle at vBulletin offices, and cry. I dragged you into this because YOU liked someone else's post, that attacks me personally. Use your brain. Use it.
First of all, just because I don't own a million plus forum, does not mean that my point is invalid. Secondly, it was not an easy decision to move from vB4, to xenForo. You, like everyone else seem to have skipped over one detail, which I said: I stayed with vBulletin 6 months after vB4 went gold. Having faith, hoping that vBSI would churn out quality updates. They didn't. It was the 4.1.4 update that made the decision that much easier.

For a 2,000/3,000 posts site, my server shouldn't pushing exorbitant server resources - yet it was - then for the site to break on vB upgrade? #@^& THAT. I've decided to move.

Can you point out the top 5 features it is missing that are deal breakers to you? I have used vBulletin since 2004 and have not really missed anything from my move to xenForo.

I can tell you a few things that would have been deal breakers if I didn't code them...

Out of curiosity, but why did you want attachments and avatars stored in the database? That sort of goes against the norm for a well performing web application, especially for larger sites, because it means more load on the database. And in most cases, the database is the bottleneck for a web application.

IIRC it was due to his multiple server setup.

Danger of going off topic here, but is there some reason you cannot just have them on an NFS server that all the web servers share ?

Our database server has never been our bottleneck. Let's say you had 100 web servers (I don't, but just for sake of argument), would you really want all your avatars and attachments stored 100 times (once on each web server)? Not to mention the complexity of trying to keep all the web servers avatar/attachment files in sync and when one is deleted/uploaded. Or how long it would take to even do that when you have millions of them.

It's a single point of failure. The query to retrieve an attachment or avatar is a very simple query (key based, no joins) and run fairly rarely because of how they are cached (unless the user clears their cache, they need to query for each avatar/attachment seen once per year in our case regardless if the browser is closed).

Before you make the argument that the database is also a single point of failure, we use MySQL Cluster... so internally everything is stored on 2 servers for redundancy, all servers are fully write capable and you can take any server down without any problems. And our setup can handle about 14,000,000 SQL reads per second as well as 6,000,000 writes. With the proper caching headers on the avatars/attachments, it works out to an average of about 2 extra (very simple) queries per second out of that capacity of 14M.

In fact, we are also thinking about doing away with memcached and intentionally going back to using MySQL for that stuff (again, not recommended with the "normal" version of MySQL).

Hehe....there should be a warning, "Shawn is currently writing a post." It could have saved my comment to Paul.

Thanks for the explanation Shawn. Ragtek's post actually answered my question too. Thank Ragtek.;)

Not to bring up bad memories but where was the single point of failure that caused you to lose the mysql data awhile back?

That was 100% user error (my fault) because of the wrong command given to all the cluster nodes. It had been so long since I restarted any cluster node that they were all started with the --initial flag... meaning wipe out all data and act as if it's an empty cluster initially coming online. You can start an individual node like that just fine since it will just populate itself from existing data. But I totally screwed up and took the cluster completely down intentionally to change some things, and brought all the nodes online concurrently with that --initial command.

Definitely my fault, but it might not be a bad idea if ndbd were to prompt you... "are you sure you want to wipe everything out?" when you use that --initial command. haha
