So it has been a while since I have really been involved in helping a community and been staff. So I have been looking for the past week or so for an opportunity. There have been many around places however they all seem to be on really disappointing forums where nothing is done to make them decent.

Do you find this often too? Do you have any ideas of where I can find a decent forum to work at?

I've never "looked to be staff" but I do know what you're saying. When I've seen staff request it's usually on new forums and it almost seems like the owners are just looking for someone to do all the work.lol
Whenever I've looked for staff for my own forum, I look at the members first. I couldn't imagine just handing over access to someone who wasn't a forum member already. O.o

I just usually do my part as an active member. By contributing new threads, posts and sometimes ideas. I've been selected a few times to become a moderator before and that's usually the motto that I follow. I rarely ask unless I really have a good feeling about the community.

When choosing staff on my community, I go through my active members at first and ask them a few questions and see if they'd like to work for us. I haven't hired a new moderator in a long time though. My staff team has been running fine for a bit.

The good news is I finally found a decent place. I agree with what you both say though. Tired of seeing so many bad forums I guess.

I never ask to be staff elsewhere. Why would I want to work under another site owner or administrator's rules? I wouldn't. On the other end, I'm difficult to work with. I have high expectations and no tolerance for stupid mistakes or abuse of authority. It's my way or no way. As a result, I look for members who already see eye-to-eye with my way of doing things. There aren't many of them.

You should try running your own forum that way you know how everything runs and you have your rules and your own circle of friends.

What you should do is find a forum that you really like, and offer them your services to see if their looking for staff. That way you can pick the forum you'd moderate, and you'd already know it wasn't a disappointing forum.

It might be a good idea to create some quality posts on that forum before messaging an admin.

I have never gone looking specifically for a place to become staff on either.

Usually, I'm a member of a site for a while and then get asked to become staff instead. I only accept when it's a site I truly want to dedicate my time and energy to, though.

May just be me but I like helping people rather than run me own as it is less stress.

The fact you are looking to become staff by asking on forums you are a new member of is a red flag, what exactly is it that you want to gain by becoming staff?

I choose my moderators by their activity level, their knowledge and their respect from members. If they aren't mature they won't last long so I look for that as well.

No seriously run your own forum. You will learn quicker that way what people like and dislike about how it's run. You will learn things about yourself when you run your own forum.
The fact that you are looking to become a mod on everyone's forum doesn't always work well. What if you had run ins in the past with these people. They aren't going to like you trying to tell them how to do their job. So get your own forum learn about what sort of people you want on your own forum.
If you ask to become staff you will get banned.
I know of a forum that I used to post on that is full of [****][****][****][****]wits. All they do on this particular forum is bully people they are jealous of or don't like.

I have been a webmaster for around 6 years now so I know the benefits of owning my own forum or just helping other people out but I still like helping other people out only in my position.

Are you able to come up with new topics ideas and keep a forum's activity flowing? We need some more people like this on my forum. Take a look Virtual pet list and let me know what you think.

I also think if you become more active here, @Brandon could possibly hire you here to work for us as well.

I also think its great that you're looking to get involved with another forum. It's always nice to have a passion for a place and become active there. I love managing a forum because I'm always meeting new people and discussing whatever is on my mind with my members.

Sure I can come up with a range of topics and posts to keep activity flowing.

I would believe there are many better options than me for this forum to be honest but it would be a great opportunity.

I've never looked to be hired a staff member in any forum either, but I know what you're saying. I've seen so many new forums with admins who do absolutely nothing and expect their volunteer unpaid staff to do all the work. This is why 90% of them fail in only a couple weeks and they get deleted. I wish more new admins were more proactive.

That is the one main issue I have though - so many ideas but so little money to do them. :(
