A question was recently asked about what google is doing to combat comment spam, and Matt Cutts answered in his own video.

    Thoughts on what he said?

Unfortunately youtube is blocked at work so I'll have to watch it later. I like Matt Cutt's and have been reading over his blog for years, I'm sure there is good stuff in the video.

Dont take Matt Cutts for every word that he says. He just says what Google want us to hear, and that certainly doesnt mean that its the truth. We black hatters had been hearing him for years, and we certainly knows that he says one thing and what really happens is another thing. So beware!

I remember that I read somewhere, "If you want to succeed in Internet Marketing, do opposite of what Matt Cutt says". While I don't think this statement is entirely true, I do believe that most of the stuff that he says is merely propaganda and webmasters should do their own testing to see whether things are as bad as he is saying. I think his team has created more problems than they have managed to solve so his statements no longer affect my work.

Quite true. I wont recommend doing everything the opposite that Matt speaks of, but its recommended to try things on your own first. Try experimenting with it.

Google did try combating comment spam earlier, and that was how nofollow came!

As far as I see it there are two effective ways that Google combats things like this:
    1) actually physically fix something that does prevent them from working anymore
    2) tell people that it doesn't work anymore

Whatever Google cannot change they tell you that it doesn't work. That's how a lot of the SEO myths get started.
