With the life of a community comes promoting - finding members and trying to keep them to stay. So the point here is do you enjoy promoting or do you hate doing it? For me, I kinda find promoting enjoying - especially once the new members come in, but its also a tough task because you have to go all out and try to attract new people.

    What's your thoughts on this?

No not really. It is not really something I enjoy or would consider doing in my free time for fun but it is something I do to just help improve my site. But sometimes it can be fun depending on the site. I usually have fun with active admin sites like this one.

I like doing it, but it's very time consuming. Sometimes (like today) I find several hours have passed :)

Ya, you're right that it takes a lot of time, but I wouldn't say its so hard especially if you know who your targeted audience is and such.

I enjoy promoting on social media because sometimes you get to have freedom to use wit, and funny stuff on it. Especially in the video game space, where the majority of gamers love "memes" such as "OBJECTION!" for MVC3/the ace attorney series. You get to be really creative, and when you put out brilliance, kabom. People listen, and come to your site.

    That's also true for advertising/marketing.

The downside of promoting is that when you promote something and you think you can get more traffic and more shares from it... It frustrates me when it falls on deaf ears. And the worst part of it all, is that it doesn't register members. :(

I don't mind promoting my site. As long as it gets my site's name out there more and pays off, it's fine and a necessary thing to do for your site's success and growth. :)

Depends on my mood, and what I'm doing for the promoting really. I sometimes agree to a post exchange with another admin, and find myself actually enjoying the people and conversations on the other community. Other times, meh, I'd rather chew glass.

No. Thats the part I actually do not like. The building, modding and creating of the site is the part I enjoy. The rest is work. :P

Actually, in all honest, yes I do. :)

The reason is, and please don't see me as trying to brag though I think I do have some right to :p... I launched a forum (my admin forum) and worked really hard on promoting it and adding content frequently on a daily basis. In 5 months (we are not even 6 months old yet), it became the largest admin forum powered by SMF with over 15,000 posts, nearly 3,000 topics and over 200 members. Promoting my forums, especially that one has resulted in a very positive and rewarding thing for me. So yes, I enjoy promoting a lot :)

However, I manually promote forums ;) I don't use any sort of paid service or automated services at all. The reason is because when the forum gets huge, I can look back and say "You did that Shawn!" and that alone will fill my own self confidence which is something more and more people need to do ;)

Promotion is the area where I'm most lacking and something that I should really work on. My problem is there is very little direct cause and effect. I could spit out links on Twitter and Facebook all day and not get one visitor or get 2000 visitors. If I don't see tangable results I feel like it's wasted time.

I don't enjoy it while I don't hate it,
I guess you can say that I just go with the flow, ;) Heck, if I start a contest tomorrow for one of my websites/forums, I might not promote it as much as I'd want.

I prefer have my members promote it ( which might be part of the contest itself ) to win the prize, :D

I would have to say this, if you hate or dislike promoting and marketing your community, then you might as well give up ;) Why? Because to get anywhere, even in a small target of viewers, you will have to market the community :) Learn to like the challenge and it wont be so bad, grasshoppers ;)

It is! Its almost like watching your child or pet grow up :) Maybe not to that much of an extreme but like it, haha. I mean you got to feed it plenty of topics and members so that it grows up to be big... :P I could go on and on but it would become pretty goofy hehe!

I'm suprised I'm not the only one that thinks like you do. Like, a new forum is a newborn baby, then after a few months, its in its infant stages. I'd say after about 6 months, its in the toddler stages. But, no matter what you still have to nourish it for it to grow, and that's why I call online communities the same thing as taking care of a baby, you have to promote, work, and put in a lot of hours. Same thing as being a parent because you lead your community by example.
