Yea forumotion is pure crap in terms of support and just about everything, they did loose alot from converting to a "real" forum but in the end its worth it. They can still recover if they wanted to. Joel is not trying, all they need to do is promote their promotion forum lol. The future is still bright for them.

I agree, they need all staff to be active which they are not, cut the dead wood for starters and then promote like mad.

Yea definitely, and actually start hiring people who have experience and not power hungry moderators like that guy who's name starts with a "g"

Promotions forums are great, you just have to know how to use them to your benefit.

Promotions forums help you improve your forum, get you few hits, and give you backlinks, but it does not help you get lot of active members unless your forum has to do with web managing (admin forums, coding forums, etc) or is a general discussion forum.

The best ways to get member is:
    • Having a link in your signature and post in forum that relates to your forum.
    • Your site in in the top 5 on 1st Google search page under targeted keywords.

Who says you have to have an admin/webmaster forum to get the most out of promotion forums, I disagree with that, but I agree with the rest of your points.

It just something I notice. For example:

There two twins, both does the same method of adverting, put the same amount of work into thier forum, etc. The only different is John is running a forum for MyBB Admins while James is running a Xbox 360 fan forum.

John and James join a promotion forum. John will get more real members (By real I mean people are posting on forum out of their free will, not because they are getting paid, part of exchange, etc) than James because a promotion forum is full of admins and some of them use MyBB, but there will be very few Xbox 360 fans in promotion forums and out of that few only about 1 or 2 will join.

And that's exactly why I don't use promotion forums. They're not good for me unless I'm looking to do post exchanges with other forum owners. It's a win for admin communities though, and that's good.

I started using Promotion forums back in 2008 when I ran gaming forums, and I got a good amount of members not counting exchanges.. you don't have to have a admin/webmaster forum to be able to benefit from them.

I never said your forum have admin/webmaster to get all the benefits of a promotion forum. My point is: It is is easier for person to get real member from a promotion forum if their forum has to do with web developing.

There are cases where people, who run a forum not relating to admin/webmaster, get active member from promotion forums but it is rare. The reason why it is a rare thing is because there may not be fans of the niche you forum is about on a promotion forum.

Promotions forums are great to advertise on when you first start off your website.

I agree but to add to it. Promotion forums give you a free way of promoting and improving your website. When you start off your website obviously it'll remain unknown to the entire world until you promote it. Makes sense.

Aside from getting your site on google and other search engines a simple visit to a promotion forum can help greatly. Their basic services like site reviews and advertising can help get people to notice it. Great for someone just starting out a website or forum. :)

Care to elaborate? Because not all communities can benefit from a promotion forum. I know I haven't had much luck there - only if I do post exchanges, and spread my forum link in my signature around. You really never know who's going to visit your site if you mention it and such.
