I know some forum owners get a lot of members from promotion forums - but what do you guys think about them? Are they great for networking? Or do you find it annoying that you need to go around talking about your community, and being allowed to link out to it?

I know you can sometimes find a lot of post exchanges members there, and such, but is being apart of a forum promotion forum really worth it? After all, everyone is there to promote their community, and bumping the topics to make sure their thread stays on top on that particular forum.

Do you find that promotion forums have a lot of spam?

I've not had too much success with them for my forums, but for my websites they are great ;)

I have used Promotional forums before and they bring success and loyal members to your website.

It depends. I'm not against promo forums by any means because they offer great services and nine times out of ten, you'll always find staff willing to help and lend a hand if you know where to look, but at the same time, everyone seems to copy each other these days, and there are no unique services at all. I've been on a fair few forums that offer PM advertising as part of their services, which really pissed me off as for one thing, PM advertising is frowned upon on many forums for a reason, and two, I didn't want to log on to a forum and the first thing I see is a PM from someone begging me to join someone else's forum. So I'm actually iffy about it, and I am reluctant to join new promotion forums for the same reasons.

Wow, same here.. I hate receiving PMs like that.. it just shows how desperate they are. And promotion forums shouldn't allow it.

Promotion forums are great if your site fits the niche. Many times, promotion forums are geared towards other webmasters in my opinion as others come on to advertise and gain services.

If your site fits the likings of other webmasters than the amount of success you see verses a gaming forum or something outside of the "webmaster club".

Yea you are right dan, niche is very important, I have gotten alot of success from advertising on FP mainly because of adminbb being a webmaster/admin forum.

Great point. I know when I posted about my community there, I don't receive much responses, but if I owned a webmaster forum, I'm sure I'd get a lot of people to the community, its just not for everyone really. But, promotion is marketing - its a good way to display your community to everyone.

Yeah, it does show how desperate you are as a Webmaster if you request services like PM advertising. I sure as heck wouldn't go that route, that's for sure! I'd just stick with normal services like packages or reviews, but NEVER PM advertising.

Yea true cpvr, but it can still help you regardless of the niche. They offer interesting services and there are many things to do there.

It's great because if a member goes to your site to exchange posts with you and find they like it they tend to stay and will return.
Sure you have those that are only interested in there own community and will do there part and never return but even if you gain an active loyal member out of every 20 exchangers it's still worth it in the long run.
I don't see how they harm a community if someone posts spam you just delete crappy posts and don't exchange with them again in my opinion.

I think that promotion forums are only beneficial to other promotion forums. It's just a bunch of administrators looking to get others to their sites; so the only "interesting" sites are just other promotion-type forums where people can go to promote their sites.

I got some advice from a friend, who is currently running a successful free forum host and that was that promotion forums are useless due to the fact that nearly everyone is there just to advertise their own sites and not actually join them...

That does make sense, when you stop and think about it. I know I would like to cut back a bit after our first year anniversary, or at least not visit so many advert forums.

I haven't tried a promotional forum yet, I think they only bring a short rise in traffic and members. But after reading this thread I think I'll give one a try, and see what happens.

It really depends on your experience, I see many forums on FP (non promotion/webmaster) get alot of success and members. I remember my gaming forum (PlanetGamers.org) Which got alot of members from FP.

I'm fairly new to the forum and webmaster area and I've only just started learning about SEO and how everything works but I believe that promotion forums would give you a helping hand. As I've just recently created my first ever forum I'm getting services from them to help boost it to an acceptable number before releasing it.
