Well to let you guys that dont know what a TLD is, its stands for Top Level Domains. Examples would be .com, .org, .net, .info like www.admin-talk.com is a TLD. So is it a want or a need? Do people need a TLD to really be successful?

My opinion would be is yes you do need a TLD to really really be successful, but there are very few websites out their making it big with a free domain. But its very rare, whats your thoughts?

Its more a want than a need, as I'm pretty sure there are lots of succssful forums running on .co.cc sub-domains & hosts sub-domains.

I'd say it's a want. Yes, TLD's are a good thing to have as they get indexed on search engines like Google and you're likely to get more traffic, but it's really not needed. That's what your bookmarks are for is bookmarking a favorite site. So even if you had one with a ridiculously long subdomain, all you have to do is just add the site to your favorites and you can visit it anytime without there being a url to remember.

If you're concerned about SEO and making it really big and being very friendly to google, it's closer to a need. I'd settle for .net on a very rare occasion but I always stick to .com.

I agree with you except as a TLD it doesn't make a difference on SEO if you hsve a .com a .org or a .net it depends on the contents of the site.

Yes, you need either .com, .org, or .net to even get looked at. However, if you have a site called xhacks.net and there is xhacks.com you would not do well with a .net because it seems you are trying to copy that site.So if you are looking for a TLD and someone has the same name you are looking for in a .com, think of a diff name.

If you really want a successful forum and want it to last, then a TLD is a need. It's not a need for a few months, as we all know there are big forums out there operating without a TLD, but these forums are lucky ones and have been around for a long, long time so have an active userbase. :P

It's very important to have the TLD. I don't think there are any successful forums or websites that started within the last 2-3 years that are still on a subdomain. I know that there are many successful bloggers that are on a subdomain, but they are long term bloggers with other ways to get noticed. I wouldn't consider sites like psd.tutsplus.com a subdomain as they are a network.
