I really really want to build a site around my current forum. I have looked at wordpress and joomla and can't decide which is best. What i want to do have a nice homepage have a cool looking articles section have a database kind of setup for fish profiles and care sheets with pics. Does anyone use either of these for similar things?
Ok, I know this is a section for vB and I don't have a vB butttt, I hate joomla. It takes so much to learn about it, Wordpress has an easy way for you to adapt to it, imo newaiz. I use Wordpress for Setsou Design, and IMO it looks cool~
If those are the two choices, than WordPress all the way. Tried Joomla and didn't like it. Wordpress though is not your "father's bloggin system" anymore. It is a CMS in its own right. You can manage content via posts (great for many articles), pages (great for those static pages every site needs), or links (for that directory you want to build). In 2.8, they exposed the custom taxonomy system so you can create taxonomies for just about anything. Article series, reviews, recipes, you name it. You can even make custom "write panels" to eliminate the information you're not using from input. It also has thousands of templates available that present any sort of site you can dream of. When I was looking for a CMS for a site, it ultimately came down to Drupal and Wordpress. Now Drupal is a great system but I wanted to spend my time on the site building content, not building the site. Even with that, I originally chose Drupal. After 6 months of part-time developing, I still didn't have a site that I felt was worthy of my content. In fact it would need a lot more work because of a bug in the version which caused queries to spiral out of control when you had multiple content types created. At one point, I had 5000 queries per page and it would take upwards of 2 minutes for the page to load. This didn't happen in Drupal 5.X but did in 6.X. However 5.X's theming system was archaic. Anyway, in frustration, I decided to give Wordpress 2.6 a try even though most people said it was only a "blogging" system. After 3 hours of work, I had recreated everything that I had done in Drupal and was able to get the site online. That alone is a testimony that the software is good. However I didn't promote the site or get a chance to actively work on it yet. Right now, I am rebuilding it in Wordpress 2.8 and hope to have it back online soon.
There is really only one choice here, and its wordpress. joomla is not secure enough to use on anything. Those big sites - people like NASA and Yahoo - run wordpress for a reason. Also, they DO NOT use joomla for a reason.
Wayne put it quite well. Wordpress is still labelled as a blogging software, but it really is a CMS, and I'd argue it is much more flexible than any of the other CMS's out there. All you really need to make it better than any of the joomlas, drupals, etc... is to tweak the "custom fields" area of wordpress. Its templates are amazing that they're simple php and html, and completely independent of the actual softwares php.

Exactly... when I first used Joomla... I did NOT know where to start. For those who have Joomla, I salute you for being the brave ones.
I've been very impressed with WordPress lately, it is so much easier to adapt it to your needs than many other packages.
lol ok wordpress it is. Thanks very much. I have downloaded 2.8, is it ok just to upload it to same database as forum and then install and work on it? Also should i upload it to main folder and not in the forum one?
Over the past 4 - 5 years I have seen and tried all kinds of CMS software. This includes everything from phpnuke and postnuke all the way through wordpress. So far, I have been the most impressed with wordpress. I ran a joomla - smf site for 6 - 8 months and was not impressed with joomla at all. And it was not just with the software, it was the laxed attitude on security, lack of support, heavy handed admins in the joomla forum, lack of integration with forums, lack of officially supported bridges or integration projects. And then there is what the joomal developers "thought" open source meant. The whole project is one big freaking mess. I will never understand why joomla is so popular. Wordpress on the other hand, all I have to say it "wow".
Joomla has too steep of a learning curve for this little brain. Wordpress does everything I need it to do, is very flexible and user-friendly. The spidies love WP too
