Are there programmers or developers that you'll never use?

I’ve always been a real stickler for customer support, this is true is my daily life as well. Like if I got somewhere to eat and get horrible service, I’ll likely never go back to that place to eat again. For example, there is this good Mexican place here in town that I tried when I first moved up here a few years ago. They added 2$ to my tip after I left and I didn’t notice it until I saw my credit card recite, well needless to say, I’ve never gone back to that store even though it’s now changed ownership. I guess to me it’s a sign or poor respect, plus there are literally 100’s of other quality Mexican places to eat here in town.

What’s this have to do with programmers or developers you say? Well I feel the same way for developers and designers, you get one change to make a first impression, screw that up and I’m done with you. I’ve ran into this more and more with new “mostly young” developers that think they deserve respect when they don’t give it out. I don’t care if a dev has the exact mod I need, if he/she acts like an asshat, they can go screw themselves, they will not get my money or referrals.. Period!
Luckily I know several developers and I’m also very familiar with how code works so if there is a mod that I really want but the dev is a jerk, I can either make it myself or have it custom coded for my needs.

My question is to you guys, do you ever NOT use a developer because if his or her attitude, does that ever stop you from using any of their mods like I’ve described?

The big issue I have is that if we let those devs continue to act this way, they’ll never learn and will likely think there is nothing wrong with what they do things.

I also understand that we’re always learning and sometimes we make mistakes, I can fully appreciate devs that “grow up” and realize that maybe they didn’t know everything like they portrayed in the past. That will get you more respect from me over someone who doesn’t accept change and is “stuck in their ways” to put it lightly.

Luckily, I don't need to hire programmers, b/c I am one myself ( ;) ), but I agree there's a lot of rot in the haystack occasionally. But people are people, and I think it's all just about getting along with one another. In business just as in private life, if you don't get along, it won't work.

I think if I were to hire programmers on my own, I would send them a questionnaire first with some questions about what they do and did and what they think about certain things, and perhaps a couple of questions related to the field of work. I think it can say a lot about a person how they talk to others, in writing and otherwise.

There are several. You want a list? Anyone who says, "I could develop a better forum than this if I wanted to." The first responder to any request for paid help. Anyone long on opinion but short on results. I could name specific names but ultimately it's a buyer beware scenario with programmers. You have no way of knowing if they are capable of doing what you want until they actually do what you want.

When hiring developers I aim for a long term business relationship based upon fairness. I can work with programmers who have poor social skills as long as they are able to communicate somewhat respectfully, deliver quality and treat me as fairly as I treat them.
However, when a developer is frequently in trouble with others, or if initial contact is very challenging, I will not start projects with the dev.

The devs I work with most are always respectful and have proven to be fair. But I am always looking for more senior devs.

What really puts me off is sloppy work or poor code quality. I frequently open micro-projects and have the results audited by senior devs to see if there is potential for larger projects. This is how most developers fall through.

Not as of this point in time, since I haven't hired any programmers (at least ones I've paid) yet. If I did though, maybe it'd be a different story, I wouldn't use anyone who tried to rip me off.

    ha, funny you mention him
I was actually happy with the interaction he gave me, I had suggestions and some issues.. It was all "suppose to be fixed with the next big update", sadly I moved away from vBulletin before that next version came out.

I think that's a great product/idea, there is a smaller xf version but not near as many providers as the vb version.

You know I always thought it was a great idea. But, his attitude was so messed up. It was like he was always mad or pissed when you pointed out something was wrong. And then he would rather claim user error before attempting to help or fix the problem. I agree I loved the product, but his attitude and the interactions we had drove me nuts. At one point I felt like I was coding the plugin for him.

The guy who developed the job board I run on my forum is really unfriendly, to put it in mild terms. I will probably need some custom work and, even if it was normal to ask him about it (and pay), I'll steer as far as I can from him. He's got few other scripts I might be interested in, but I had enough of this attitude, so I'll chose other vendors.

I am a coder and programmer myself. Hence I do not have to hire anyone, instead, I get hired :). One of my clients had me undergo two tests at oDesk (I do not work via oDesk, but he did and so before picking me, he asked me to register and complete two tests of his choice). Another had called me up on skype and we had a long 4 hour chat during which he was evaluating me on my skills, my willingness to learn and my attitude in case I got stuck up with some task at hand.

I refuse to use vBulletin for any of my forums. I just really despise of the layout and speed of which page's render.

So does that mean you'd never work with a vBulletin developer that also developed on the scripts you use?

I have never heard of anyone complaining about the speed. I mean it is very easy to optimize the server in order to make the pages load faster. But, thats a new one on me. Though each to their own of course :)
