I'm thinking about switching to vBulletin so I can add a blog. Which platform is the most secure? I'm currently using MyBB, but I couldn't find any official blog plugins. I kind of just like the overall style of vBulletin too.

Out of all the forum platforms, which would you recommend (definitely need security as well)?

Any web application is only as secure as the server it's on. :) That being said, I cannot think of any forum package (free or paid) that has a major security flaw in the wild.

You may want to hold on buying vBulletin. vB 5 is due out probably before the end of the year and you will have to buy the license all over again to upgrade to 5.

I personally recommend Invison Power over Vbulletin. I prefer IP blog over vbulletin's and IPb is very secure.

I am currently using vBulletin and Wordpress using a bridge (vBSSO) and its pretty good, just a few issues with accounts but that hasn't stopped me using it.

I know that vBulletin is quite popular. I'm trying to remember the one our forum admin used, but I'm drawing a blank.
Do you recommend I wait for the 5th version? I'm not sure what I should do.

The problem with IBP though is they tend to require A LOT of resources. I get warnings about not having enough resources when I install IPB... its funny too because I am on a very large dedicated server and appears to have more resources than I will ever need...

yeah i never had that happened to me yet :/
I'm on shared hosting which i'd imagine would be far less resources than you are allotted and i haven't ran into that as of yet....

I'll keep a look out for that though.

Well maybe it was something on my part but I am not sure. All I know is I pay for more resources than I will ever use, just to be prepared :p so resources shouldn't of been an issue with the installation. However, dreamhost does things differently than other hosts so maybe it was on their end and it just didn't get along with IPB.

Dreamhost is absolutely horrible with database powered sites. They cram all databases on to database servers which sounds good in theory but they're severely overloaded.

I tried to install XF on Dreamhost today I stopped hte process after 5 minutes as it was trying to create the database tables and such.

(and yes I bought an XF license again -- D'Oh!)

I have a XF installed, no issues. Now I am using a dedicated server though. I will say running a forum using their shared plans isn't worth it because its seems to use a lot of their unlimited resources lol. However, I have been with them for 10 years now and they have been extremely good to me. I had issues for a month pretty much every day related to the DC that houses my server. I made a complaint on their Facebook page of all places and they contacted me to apologize and give me enough free credits to pay for my server for 2 entire months :) I was very happy with that move, stuff like that will keep a customer. Since then, I've not had anymore issues.
